Spot Treating With Excel

I often hear people spot treating their tanks with excel to help get rid of algae. What exactly does that mean and how much do you add to say a 55 gallon aquarium? I have used excel in the past and it never had the algae killing effect that everyone claims that it has.

Remove the plants from the aquarium, brush on the excel, leave for a few minutes then rinse in old tank water then add it back to where you want it.

or use a syringe, switch of the filters and gently squirt the carbo/excel onto the leaves and leave the filter off for 5 mins.

+1 I actually use a needle for everything! meds/water treatments you name it! a 1 Ml syringe with no needle comes in really quite handy!
