Was enjoying a 90* day by the lake. Decided to walk the shore and see if I could find any drift wood, I came across a bunch of panfish spawning. I'm not sure exactly what kind of panfish. Maybe someone knows? North American cichlids,.............dig holes like tropical cichlids .

Pics of a couple different fish, including some bass. This lake is spring fed and part of a state park. It is 90ft deep in some parts , it is also very clear. On average you can see over 10 ft underwater. Gas engines are not allowed on it

Cool Pics!
Those spawning beds look like that of Bass to me.....It's a great time to get pics of them,if your careful in a canoe you can get really close, even right over them without scaring them up.Once they have spawned they won't go more than a few feet from the nest even if you chased them,in fact a lot of Bass species won't even leave to eat until after the eggs have hatched, nor will they eat even if food falls into the nest. They regard it as a potential egg predator, and will chomp it up and spit it out outside of the nest.Cool fish.

Top one is a green sunfish, and the bottom 2 are bluegill.

You can see them on the beds.

A bass wouldn't spawn in a bed that small. Besides, bass spawn at 60 deg, that water temp has to be in the 70's.

What do you mean bass won't eat when food falls in the nest? That's the best time to catch them. They will try to eat ANYTHING that comes around that nest.

Edit: Did you happen to grab any of that cabomba for your aquarium?

I know because I fish them and have do so for aslong as I can remeber, they do not eat the lures, they are attacking them to keep them from eating the eggs, the beds don't look very small to me,i've seen them 1000's of times in 1 1/2-2 foot beds.

Well I really hate to say this but I am conservation officer and I know my fish. My 4 year biology and 4 year environmental degree covers spawning bluegill.

You can PLAINLY see the bluegill on the beds on the top pic. Every one of those beds has either a green sunfish or a bluegill on it.
