About the biotope
Everyone in the fishkeeping hobby has tried a blackwater biotope once during their career as an aquarist. It is not one biotope, but many biotopes based on geographical location. The most common location for blackwater habitats are located in the tropical rainforests of Asia and South America. The blackwater biotope is named for the brownish tint of the water released by tannins. Blackwater habitats are becoming rarer in the near future, the one of the best methods of conserving these habitats to the public is recreating them in fish tanks.
Asian blackwater habitats
Southeast Asia is home to many blackwater habitats, with lots of them coming from Indonesia, Thailand and Borneo. These habitats differ from the South American blackwater biotope in terms of plants and livestock. Some rare fish live in such habitats to thrive and spawn. Peat swamps with small cyprinids and wild bettas are unique to this geographical area. Plants native to these areas and handle these conditions include crypts and Bucephalandra. The well-studied North Salangor peat swamp area contains 48 species of fish, which only 6 are known to be endemic to this area. The endangered Betta albimarginata is endemic to the Indonesian province of Kalimantan Timur in the Sebuku River. They live in blackwater swamps that are 5-10cm deep among roots of vegetation and leaf litter. We don't exactly know the species' threats are, since its biology and threats remain relatively unknown. It is a mouthbrooding fish, which means raising fry from the mouth area. These fish are excellent jumpers, so a tank lid is recommended so the fish don't escape.

South American blackwater habitats
This is the most common type of blackwater habitats to make. These habitats are mostly from blackwater rivers and basins in the Amazon Rainforest and other locations near it. This includes Rio Negro and Rio Orinoco two rivers that contain blackwater habitats for fish such as the cardinal tetra. I have kept this fish for 7 and a bit months (second fish I got) in a small group and planning to move them from the 10 gallon with incompatible fish that I still have to a bigger tank to prevent stress. I can't do it until my hair grows back. The cardinals are endemic to the upper Negro and Orinoco rivers in Brazil and Colombia. They reach a size from 3cm to 5cm. This fish is very popular to the aquarium trade because of their colourful bodies. Plants from the Rio Negro area include Hygrophila and Hemianthus. Plants from the Rio Orinoco area include Cabomba and Echinodorus.

How to build a blackwater biotope
It is quite simple to build a blackwater aquarium, however it needs the following things: Leaf litter is very important in this setup. You must boil them first, however, to be put in the aquarium. Mix river sand with small gravel to make a riverbed look. Driftwood is important too. It releases tannins to the water like leaf litter does. Put some native plants that are suited to these conditions. Remember to put the bigger plants in the background first then the smaller ones to give a sense of depth.

Conservation of blackwater habitats
These habitats will be increasingly rarer or disappear in the near future if we don't act. Conservation methods include recreating their habitats in a large home fish tank, preserving national parks that might have them or seeing one in a public aquarium. Public aquaria displaying these habitats are rare. Talk to your local public aquarium about them and how they can help save blackwater species. No public aquaria in Australia has kept a blackwater habitat on one of their exhibits. Ask them if they have it. Education about blackwater ecosystems are important. Make a blackwater tank in your school to show the students and learn them about ecosystems. It's a great way to help kids learn about biology and entertain them in the science class. These methods could save the blackwater habitat for the future of the many species that live in here.
