Smelly Tank!

Hi all,

Im not sure if i am ment to post this kind of thing in here but i am new to the site.

I have a small fish tank, in it i have 2 African Dwarf Frogs ( Fraggle & Flossy ) a betta ( Sid Fishous ) and a couple of Guppies. My tank has been up and running fine for about 2 years untill about 2months ago it started to smell. The smell can only be described as wet smelly stinky socks. When this happened i cleaned everything in my tank and allowed to resettle and put new gravel, plants, everything was new. Low and behold today i have the smelly sock fish tank back, i have replaced all my filters but cant seem to get rid of the smell.

Please help as my fish tank is beside my bed and makes my whole room smell.

Forgot to add I have a Trickle filter system, but I do have a larry the lobster ornament could this be causing it!!!!
I have now just removed larry the lobster as an emergency measure and boy did he smell!!!!

lol check the back of the cabinet you might find so0me old socks lol, no in all seriousness ive never heard of a smell like that from a tank before so can't really help you sorry

Thanks Mixmaster Jay, I now believe i have a very special smelly tank! lol but the fish seem really happy

lol a very stinky tank lol , i would do 25% water change everyday untill the smell starts to subside that might help with it , at least the fish are happy though it must be the very speciel smelly tank lol

Well, did you test your water? Fish act fine very often, but really, the water parameters could be crazy! But I don't think ammonia in a fish tank smells like anything... lol

Well, my friend's tank smells like that too, but we can't figure it out. Her whole room smells like that, actually. It's really gross, but her fish are doing amazingly great, which is weird...

have you checked the back of the stand for water damage? maybe mold?

sometimes tanks do get smelly there is a reason i just can`t remeber what is is
have you stuck your nose over the tank to check its coming from the actuall tank, it couldnt be the carpet?( may have got wet during a WC)
a well established tank should have a nice earthy smell

My fish tank sits on a unit have checked that no sign of any water or any bad smells. I have put my nose over the fish tank lifted the lid took a deep breath and . I have now removed the larry the lobster ornament, who looked pitted and discoloured and stunk, but not sure whether he was the smelly object as the water still smells, i am now going to do a 25 % water change to see if this makes any differance i will do this over the next 4 days to see if it makes any difference. Any further help or advice would be great.

I do feed Fraggle and Flossy every other day bloodworm ( froozen ) could this be the problem ??

Hi, how big is the tank? have you checked to make sure all the inhabitants are accounted for? are there any snails in the tank? I know a dead snail can make it reek! when you say you changed the filter do you mean you replaced the whole lot all at once or just a bit?

what are you using as substrate? sand can get really minging ( bit like standing over a sewer pipe) if its not stirred and hoovered regularly
