Skinny Platy?

If the gills have changes colour then it could be a sign of ammonia burn, but ive got a white platy with bright red gills.... Some of them are just coloured that way.

Oh. It may just be his coloring, as I just looked at earlier pictures of him and he had the magenta color.. but less of it before. I think it would be good if I dipped him in a salt bath.... just to be sure... since my red platys had symptoms of scratching themselves on decorations near the gill area right before they died, it might be gill flukes. If only I didn't have school tomorrow, I could stay home to watch my fish all day..... ah.

I dunno, from no salt to a lot of salt can stress them and do more harm than good!

It could be the med that irritating there gills at times.

Signs of skin and gills flukes.

Red inflamed gills.
Bleeding gills.
Pale gills, with excess mucas.
Flicking and rubbing.
Darting, erratic swimming.
Laboured breathing. Gasping at surface of tank,
Red pierce marks on fish body.
Weightloss.

Unfortunately, I saw one of my red platys flashing. His dorsal fin is down (has been for awhile, I thought it was normal though). He looks like this:

But used to look like:

Today he's not flashing anymore but his dorsal fin is still down. Do you think I should feed him (and others) freeze dried bloodworms presoaked in parasite guard (& water)? Surely that would kill any internal parasites, right?

edit: Fed him the bloodworms soaked in parasite guard, then changed 25% of the water. His dorsal fin seems to be fanning out a bit! & no more flashing.

How are the fish doing?

So far- no more deaths. Some flashing with the remaining 2 red platies, and I've done salt dips for both of them. Right after the salt dip I still saw one of them flashing on the glass diffuser I have for my new DIY co2 system, but I'm guessing that's just him adjusting to the water after being in salt. So I think they ok so far! :)

I wouldn't bother with the salt dips as it will just stress the fish.
Are they showing any other symptoms?

Is the med out of the tank now?

Is there any debris floating around the tank. Or fine particles in the water.
Just try adding some fresh filter floss to your filter.

No, other than flashing nothing unusual. one of the red platies who had his dorsal fin down all the time seems to have a bite out of his dorsal fin (probably another platy who seems to be getting more aggressive lately)...

The other red platy seems to be thinner than the others (stomach area), BUT not as significant as the prior male that died... his stomach still is a bit curved but not as curved as my bumblebee platies. Not sure if that's a problem.

Yeah, the med is out of the tank (well most of it should be.....)

There's probably some dust in the tank because it doesn't have a lid since I have a breeder net for the babies.

I would get the lid back on the tank. As fish can jump out. Also if you have pets.
Household chemical can gain entry into the water.
You can buy plastic breeder boxes with lids, and airstones.

Add some fresh filter floss to filter.

Get a med that treats camallanus worms.
As I doubt the parasite guard med did much. Fish should start to gain weight once the worms have
been eradicated.
Try and get hold of some levaimsole.

Here some info on camallanus worms.

What does filter floss do?

Actually the thin platy has started to gain a bit weight after feeding. That's a good sign right? :) I forget if I mentioned that I fed them food soaked in parasite guard for 2 days, and both platies started fanning out their dorsal fins much more. If they aren't flashing anymore, that means they don't have any worms anymore right? (plus I don't see red strings hanging out... nor have I ever)

Filter floss removes fine particles from your tank water.

Does in state in the parasite guard instructions, that you can soak there food in the med?

Also it best to worm fish again a month later just to make sure there all gone.

Oh ok, I'll try to get some filter floss :)

No, it doesn't but I did look online and seems like many people had success with soaking food in parasite guard.

Thanks, I definitely will :good:
