Skinny Platy?

Let us know if you find any dead worms during the gravel vac.

Good Luck.

I don't think there were any dead worms. However after the water change I noticed one of my platies keep rubbing herself on the gravel and other surfaces. She doesn't have white spots, so I don't think it's ich... Ugh so many problems :( is it normal for them to do that?

Edit: oh nevermind. I looked it up and apparently it can happen after a water change if the hardness is changed.. How can it change though, if the water is the same? I did use a different water conditioner this time (not the trial pack I've been using), maybe she's just not used to it (hopefully)...

The reasons for the fish rubbing could be the water change, with a different brand of water conditioner.
It could also be the parasite med.

Just keep a close eye on them.

Ok.. I have some bad news. Well I think it's bad.

The female platy that I posted a picture of (the one that's not very chubby) is acting abnormally. I thought she vanished but then found her hiding in one of the ornaments. Her breathing seems to be quickened and she keeps hiding and scratching herself on ornaments and rocks. I seriously have no idea why this is happening.... all poop is normal and I've not seen worms.

Some random ideas for causes I'm wondering about:
  • could it be the rocks I put in (I think they're real, but they're shiny.. so maybe polished)
  • unlikely, but I made clay houses and glazed them. the glaze is food safe, and from what I've read online it should be fish-safe
  • ?????

I'm going to take the rocks out... and probably put her in a separate bucket. *sigh*

Ok, here are some pics

She seems to be scratching her gill area/side of her head.

Remove the rocks.
Immediate water change.

How long did you let the glaze set before adding them to the tank.

Do her gills look red and inflamed.
Or pale with excess mucas.
Any other fish showing the same symptoms.

Glaze was fired, then cooled for at least a day or two. I put it in the tank probably about a week after it cooled.

Removed rocks.. And found platy fry! 2 so far.. I put the sick female in a bucket with a tablet of tetra parasite guard. She is doing ok, I think.

I did water change Thursday, and ill try to do one tomorrow. No other fish are having the same symptoms.

It's hard to see her gills.... She is a red platy so hard to discern. Aren't gills naturally red?

It's a bit white near her gills, but she's always been like that.

No. Red gills are a sign of poisoning. Platy don't hide, they're a very sociable fish. That there is a very poorly fish, does it eat? I've only seen fish that thin that have given up and stopped eating.

Also, my fry tank has the same sponge bob house!

Yeah, she eats normally just like all the others. I got her that thin, and figured it was normal. I still can't tell if the gills are red.. I'll try to look more closely. Yeah, she was hiding when I got home and I knew something was wrong :/ she's breathing normally now, not labored.

Haha, seems like a lot of people have the same pineapple! XD

*sigh* unfortunately she died this morning. How is it that my fish are dying one by one? Like they don't get sick all at once, but only after one dies ~_~ again, no worms that I saw. I'm thinking if I should either:
A) change all the gravel, buy a new kind
B) get a new tank with new gravel and clean out the current tank thoroughly and use it as a fry tank (without gravel)

Surely that would kill any of the bad bacteria present, right? I will seriously give up if the problem persists after doing everything.. :|

Bless Her. :rip:

Don't buy skinny fish.
They could have internal parasites, diseases like fish tb.

Are you still using the wormer you bought?

I would advise getting your livebeares from a good breeder.
If you do decide to carry on buying your livebearers from an LFS. Isolate them to a hospital tank, and worm them for
camallanas worms,

Every time you add new fish to a tank you are risking disease.
Best to isolate all new fish for a few weeks.

Yeah, I've learned my lesson  Yes, I just added 3/4 of a tablet in, I think they're all ok, and it might be just me being paranoid but one of my platy has magenta gills?! not sure if he had it before but....

Since I removed the platy early, do you think the parasite could still be in my tank? And if so.... would siphoning out all the gravel and cleaning it thoroughly help?
Thanks for your reply!

Hard to tell, but to me the gills look like the fish colouring.
Is the fish breathing OK. Not laboured, or gasping.

You could do a gravel vac.
Easier said then done, but don't worry so much.
I had all the grief with livebearers.

No, he's breathing normally, just going up to the surface for air occasionally.. sort of like a betta does. But I think that's normal?

I do use a gravel vac but I feel like I'm not cleaning thoroughly enough >.< it wouldn't hurt to take all the gravel out, though right? it would get rid of the parasite eggs, probably...

Ah it's so hard not to worry when I've had fish after fish die..... :( thank you though.

If the gills have changes colour then it could be a sign of ammonia burn, but ive got a white platy with bright red gills.... Some of them are just coloured that way.
