Should I Breed Them?

Honestly, if you're in it for the money, get another fish. Or buy a decent pair off of Aquabid and ship the fish for $30 a piece. :/ Which is better than $2.50. A week.

BTW, when I said a market for the bronze cory, I meant someplace to take them. I didn't mean to make a big profit. I don't plan on quitting my day job.

i breed my other two fighters. one is a pure red veiltail (got him yesterday) with a dark blue female .
got some pics on my website www.bettas4u.piczo.com

the question was "should i breed them?"

let me ask you a few questions:

--is either of them a veiltail? if yes, then no don't breed them.

--do you know what color their parents were? if no, then no don't breed them.

--do you know what color their babies should be? if no, then no don't breed them.

--do you have a 30g grow-out tank? if no, then no don't breed them.

--do you have the time to feed the fry 3x a day? if no, then no don't breed them.

--do you have the time to change out 10 to 100 1g jars every day? if no, then no don't breed them.

--do you have an LFS who has EXPLICITLY agreed to buy up to 100 half-grown bettas? if no, then no don't breed them.

Good luck with that, np; I think it is a done deal.

I'm not sure why you asked, 92cw12. The vast majority of responses to your question were, no, don't breed a VT and research before you breed. One of the things that needs to be researched is the genetics of the fish. You clearly have not done this. With Bettas a well used phrase in breeding is "breeder quality."

There really is no point in asking wether you should breed them if you were going to anyways. Just don't come complaining when they all die.

I live in a small town and the LFS would buy from me. But I know they couldn't sell 500 bettas. I would like to venture into fish breeding, but I think I will take the advice that is given here. I have been looking for fancy guppies and they are SO hard to find. Maybe I should find a couple pretty pairs on aquabid and breed them.

You know, I would really take jollysue's advice and look into corydoras. They are friendly, easy to look after, there are lots of different varieties- and there is a lot of demand. The advantage is that whoever buys them is going to want a school- so that's 6 fish found a home at once. And the lfs can take the whole lot at once as they can all go in the same tank.

The outlay is moderate, you need a spawning tank and a fry tank- that's it. The courtship makes really nice viewing, they nuzzle each other and get more and more excited, but always very gently. Once you have got your hand in with one of the easier species, I imagine there would be a little money in breeding something more sought-after like adolfoi. Breeding corys, you probably could at least recoup your costs.

Guppies can be tricky, as their genetics are often messed up- you would need to get something expensive from a reputable breeder.

And Inchworm in the Coradoras forum is a concerned and active moderator, who will take you under her wing and encourage you. (Not to say that wuvmybetta is any less concerned or active. Wub wuv. )
You must still hang here, you know.

Age isn't the issue. It takes half a second to look up a word, and the same amount of time to correct spelling and typos. Now, it's an issue between the two of us- not, however, between you and I. We're wasting even more space discussing it. I simply corrected him without judgment in that last post, so why do you bother? If I am never to correct anybody's typos, how will they learn from that? Grammar is important. It was a one sentence correction with a laugh to lighten the mood- no need to become defensive of the grammatically incorrect brethren of yours.

 Wow.. relax buddy, this thread isn't a term paper, it's just the friggin (just for you!) internet!
Who cares about typos and the like? .. If you can't read the word, just figure it out for yourself and move along.

You're right. The local accent got the best of me.
well i breed them but none of the eggs hatched i kept them at 30 c and also the female ate about70 eggs so i only ended up with 19 eggs.

wow, less than four days after you bought the fish from the LFS you had a sucessful spawning attempt?!? :hyper: when plenty of people with experienced breeding pairs can spend weeks with no luck?!? :fun: :hyper: :fun:

whatever. i smell troll.
