Do females produce eggs if there are no males? If so, how and where do they deposit them? I have a small group of juvenile females and am wondering whether I should add a male to the group. I have them in a very large, mostly unplanted tank with driftwood. I have no interest in breeding, just want to keep them healthy and happy.

Not an expert but have always had bettas around. Females will produce eggs without males present and either reabsorb them or expel them. If the latter, they are promptly eaten by her and/or her tankmates. I would not suggest adding a male. Are your females siblings?

I have two sets of sibling females, a pair of red dragons and 3 super reds. They are a plakat (short finnage) variation, more like wild splendens but with intense coloration. They are absolutely stunning, and have no desire to add a male given your experience. I've only had them for a few days and am already smitten.
