The black neon tetra are not as colourful and doesn’t stand out as much as many other tetras however seeing them in the dealers tank so many times i’ve taken a liking to them so decided to buy a group of six, 3 females, and 3 males. So last week i set up a tank for breeding within two days they had spawned and now have over 20 very tiny fry , feeding them on Infusoria and egg yolk

They grow very fast. They're one of the easiest to breed tetras I've tried, and in my opinion, one of the most beautiful. I remember seeing them as a "new" tetra when I was a kid, and they are just as pretty now. It's easy to breed up a group of them and build a good shoal - you'll like the look of that.

You guys with your Tetra breeding . I am never going to ever consider Tetra breeding as something other than some dark art of the aquarium hobby . No matter how easy you two say it is it’s still , to me , the zenith of breeding skill in any aquarium fish .

I really like these guys but after two disasters I’ll be moving on.

The first was my own fault - I bought a dozen on a good sale at Petsmart. A week later I was treating the tank for ich, and I lost 8, along with most cherry barbs.

I rebuilt with a pair of angels and replaced 7 black neons from a reputable LFS, but as the angels grew, they found them a tasty snack. I’m now looking for something larger that will survive with the Angels, maybe Harlequin Rasboras or Lemon Tetras.

@slade - What size is the tank? I had black neons with angels for years, and they just avoided the occasional angel lunge with no issues.

Mine have been a good fit for the way I want the tank to be. Mine are just getting to breeding age. I think 2 may be expecting. I will just leave them alone. The vast majority will probably be eaten but the tank has significant cover so a couple or three might survive.
