whats the min tank size for a severum? i had a look on google and some places say 30g and others say 55g. i want to get rid of most of the fish in my 30g just leaving the catfish and was wondering if i could get one of these.if not is there any think else that would work in there?

thanks
is there anythink else that would work? i would like to get a pair of cichlids aswell would 30g be big enough for a pair of firemouths or is there any others that would be ok?

i quite like the Blue Acaras and firemouths
is there anythink a bit bigger than tetras i could have for the middle or top of the tank? the tanks 18" tall so would a angle fish be ok?

Yeah you see all kinds of sizes dotted around. I have a 65g and I wouldn't feel comfortable keeping one in there for adulthood a 4x2x2 is minimum IMO and same is said by a lot on here.

As for other cichlids that could work in that tank there are many, just depends on what you like really. I think acaras are quite an underrated type of fish for this size of tank you have tons of species that work in this size tank. Like laetacara and nannacara.

Dwarf pikes could work in there C.Regini for example. A lone Sajica or HRPs or similar etc. Errr some people keep FMs in a 30g as a lone cichlid with tank mates so some of the similar species might work but these can get quite big so get a second opinion on them Im kind of thinking out loud now lol.

A full grown severum 80gal or larger. But to grow out a 55 gal is fine till they get to be 8".

120 gallon if you want him to live grow and be happy.

75 gallon minium is what minx says ( her's is'nt even grown yet. anditsi n a 5ft tank witch is HUGE. Then you look at that huge severum she has. And it takes up half the tank itself! :hyper:

120 gallon for a fish that rarely exceeds 8" is a bit ott

they can get to be 12" and are big all around. It can take a few years for them to get that big. Females will be smaller.

I have been keeping them for 10 years, probably at least 25 different Sevs (greens, golds, rotkeils, severus, blues, notatus), the biggest one i ever had was 10 years old and he was 9"...all of my fish are over fed and over water changed....on varied diets, every day they get a mix of pellets and flake (hikari gold, cichlid staple, mbuna veg pellets), blood worm 3 times a week, few chunks of cat food, egg, earth worms, lettuce, peas, cucumber, spinach , various fruit, insects, mysis shrimp....etc

I have seen them @ 11-12" in gigantic tanks (10x10x3) but not in average tanks with tank mates.

thanks no sev then

what else could i add
this is it so far
3 upside down catfish
2 bns
1 banjo catfish
and maby the 6 corys if i dont keep them then i might get a few more upside down cats
pair of firemouths or blue Acaras
but what could i get for the higher levels of the tank? would a pair of angles work?

I wouldn't go for pairs, go for 2 individual fish that cannot hybridise.

Such as a Male Blue Acara with a female Convict, both very pretty, won't fight as much as 2 males etc
