My name is Leah and I live in the US. I just got a new severum today. I love sevs but unfortunately I haven't had much luck with them. This new little guy is the 3rd one that I've had in a little over a year. Before you all think I'm an awful severum killer, I'll explain...
The first little one I had was bought on a whim and was sick. I really, really shouldn't have bought him but I knew he was going to die at the petstore and I thought I could save him. I had him for about two weeks and I went though so much medicine. I was buying medicines online almost everyday and trying everything to save him. I had so much love for that little fish... Lucky for me I found out that I was pregnant (after battling infertility for 4 years) the day before the little sev finally died. So I was distracted enough that I wasn't devastated.
The second severum I had for 5 months and he was beautiful and healthy. Then our area got hit with a horrible ice storm and we (and all the towns around us) lost power for days. We had to leave our house (with a two month old baby) in the middle of the night and drive through the ice to get to another town where we had family that had a generator to run heat. We were able to go back to our house a couple of days later to try and save the fish but it was too late.
So here's hoping that this one makes it to adulthood! I saw him at the fishstore today and he was the only sev there for a good price so I grabbed him (and a pleco). Hopefully I can get some better pics.
Welcome, sorry to hear you havent had much luck with Sev's in the past, hope this one grows nice fat and healthy for you Anything you want to know there are plenty of us around always willing to give out advice or just have a chat really
I only have one Severum... but I love him. Can't get any pics at the moment but I'll tell you his story.
He is a Gold Severum, and still small at about 2 1/2 inches. Anyway, we were in 'Pet Supplies Plus' and that is a place I would normally not get fish from. But in a tank, probably 10 gallons with a bunch of Oscars, there he was! He was mislabeled as an Oscar, and he did not look too happy in that tank, so we bought him and took him home.
Lucky we bought him because his time might have been up otherwise, he has SEVERE ich all over! That was the first time I had disease in the tank. But by raising the temperature a bit temporarily, we were able to nurse him back to health.
He will probably get too big for my current set up but I am planning to get a 75 gallon as soon as possible to better suit him! He is one of my favroite fish, very friendly.
I saw some seriously bland brown looking ones (fully grown) at Maidenhead...really hoping he isent one of these, markings wise he is very similar but AFAICR they did not have the blue on the faces.
