Setting Up A New Tank, Advice Etc Appreciated

The temps almost down, once it hits a few more c below what it is now, i'll add the fish then as quickly as i can cut the old media up and put into the new filter.

It's sat at 28c, do you think it's ok to move the 2 mollies and Pleco across? (only fish i have!)

i'm sorry but that's simply not true. there's nothing in the water except for extra nitrates, you're better off using totally new dechlorinated water and transferring the media across.

if you want me to i can dig out several posts discussing this..........

yea ok send me some posts so i can have a look please, you can never know too much about tropical fish, im just telling justjon how i done my last new tank so he could add his fish quicker to his new tank, what i done worked well and i added fish on same day and all was well

is the temp now the same as the biorb, if so add fish and old media :hyper:

Temp on biorb reads 26/28 so will only be 1c off or so... sound ok?

yea not too bad, can you feel a difference by hand? if not add the fish.

Not by much at all.. very very very slightly warmer in new tank, but not a huge difference at all

ok they should be fine then, go ahead and put your fish in and old media :hyper:

and here's a link about moving house, again explains you do not need to take water with you as it contains nothing beneficial

ok one thing i dont get is that my uncle was a manager of watermarque in taunton somerset, i had a 150 gallon tank delivered to me on sunday just gone and i asked him the best way to do things, he said try and get as much water as possible from a used tank and old water filters to help with the cycle, i done everything he said, and i had fish in my tank within about an hour and they are doing just fine, so i guess everyone has there own opinions about used water for tropical setups, i have done a test on the water and everything is perfect and water is really nice and clear.
apart from the water part i hope justjon gets his tank up and running and fish do well :hyper:

Right guys, fish moved... filter placed in, fit quite well and just placed white sponge on top, i cleaned white spong as was dirty obviously from the dust in the water...

Pleco didnt want to be caught! So think may have stressed him a little bit.. i've left light off in new tank and it's all running, will monitor temperature to make sure stays within limits, fingers crossed!

ok, well this is gonna be difficult to answer because he's your uncle, i don't wanna speak badly of anyone's relatives. I hope you understand i mean no offence to your uncle.

The established wisdom in fishkeeping about 30 years ago was that 'old water' was best, this was because we didn't understand water and bacteria as well as we do no, int he last 30 years or so there has been a lot of research done and we've learnt a lot, because of this techniques and advice has moved on. What your uncle has told you is very much the 'old school' way of doing things, it's not generally how people run tanks nowadays. if you have a read of the links in my sig on cycling they should explain some more to you about how we do things now.

the fish will be absolutley fine after an hr, it's the effect after a few days or a week that you need to be concerned about. the links in my sig will explain some more to you though, feel free to post with any questions.

The water is looking nice and clear - it looks a bit bear as i've got a lot more room in this tank than in the biorb, luckily i have a "cave" thing that pleco can hide in.. which he's on side of at the moment, I may buy something tommorow to fill it a bit more so fish feel secure

i cant believe the price of decor for aquariums these days, its so expensive, i paid about £50 just on plants for a 3ft tank, but now there growing well and get plenty off cuttings so its well planted now, even rocks for a tank and driftwood are so expensive so i went to a local Reservoir and got some wood and stones and boiled them and left to soak in treated water and that done the job :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

yeah seems a bit mad... I noticed a "coluseum" look, like ruins of roman style-columns.. may put those in, looked very nice
