Schueled Power Cut.

my area has a planned power cut tomorrow, and i was wondering about any preparation; so far i have increased my tank temps to 32c. i was planing on doing a large water change today. so is there anything else i should do?

How about posting how long the planned duration of the outage is estimated to be?

i keep polystyrene sheets in case of power cuts. i just celotape these around the tank. very good insulation and helps retain the temps. also use a battery powered pump. hope this helps

If it's only a few hours then you'll be ok - water retains its heat very well.
Before you crank your water temperature up too high make sure your fish can handle being in 32C water!

Good advice there by ChrisCook. Most fish can easily tolerate a few degrees drop in temperature over the course of a day but not many will survive temperatures much above their stated range.

In addition, fish are cold blooded animals and as such use more oxygen at higher temperatures. As you increase the temperature in your tank the oxygen levels in the water will decrease more than usual.

How long is this planned power cut for?

Leave the tank temperature as it is, do not do a water change until after the power is back on and the tank temp has settled back down. Wrap the tank with polystrene or heavy blankets. Plastic pop bottles filled with hot water can be floated in the tank to help heat the water if the power is off for a long time, the bacteria in the pump will survive for a good few hours. If you have an external pump, wrap that in a blanket as well.

I had no power for 8 hours, did the above and did not lose any stock in all 3 of my tanks..

hey thanks for the replies the power cut is from 8am till around 6pm.

I wouldn't start raising the temp either. Rather you might start lowering the temp at a slow rate prior to the power outage to keep from any sharp declines in temp caused by the outage. Fish do not do all that bad in cooler temps for a short time as long as it’s not abrupt. Yes they are acclimated to warmer climate but a day should not hurt.
I like the idea of wrapping the tank with a blanket also.
I run my cichlid tanks without heaters and they are fine when it gets cold for a day or two
