Saving Money On Test Kits

Why would I want to spend my hard earned money on it? Sure its safe, but I'd rather look and be able to visibly watch things and know for sure then guessing if they are ok based on a test kit...

Thats completly the wrong way round. A test kit will tell you for sure if you water is free from nitrites and ammonia. Just looking is a pure guess.

I'm all up for looking at news ways to take care of your fish and I also dont think you need to test every week/day if you have a stable/established tank. But without ever using a test kit you just have no clue about your water chemistry.

A little bit of nitrites/ammonia will not kill your fish, so any that builds up between appropriate water changes will 99% of the time cause no harm.
I can watch my tanks for problems, if there is a problem that I can't figure out I will buy a test kit only for that purpose, until I have an actual need for one (such as a sick fish I can't figure out without a test kit) I won't buy one.

AND ANYONE THAT DOESNT USE DECHLORINATOR FOR WATER COMING OUT THE TAP (unless they got RO or some other filter) IS PLAIN DUMB, I MEAN THAT, COMPLETELY NOT IN TOUCH WITH THE REALITY OF FISH KEEPING, better off getting a good scren saver on their PC of a tank full of fish,i cant believe there are people out their who take so little interest in their fish's well being, if they trying to save money, i get a better idea SELL YOUR TANK, SELL YOUR FISH, THEN SELL YOURSELF
So the only way to show I care for my fish is to dump money into a test kit and dechlor? I'ved used undechlored water all my life with 0 problems from it, although i'm pretty sure I have very good water though...Also, ever heard of letting the water sit overnight to dechlor it? There are more ways to dechlor than just a stupid product cupcake.
cupcake? LOL what about Chloramine? if your water doesnt contain Chloramine, then letting it stand for 24 hrs will remove a lot of chlorine and agitatig the water through an airpump or something will further increase chlorine leaving the water.whats your motivation here? saving money? i can understand that, but stop cutting so many corners!!!!Titanrushfrom your profile, you have x8 fish in a 10gallon tank with no filter and once a week water changesthats mad, how comes you dont understand the basics of fish keeping, why so stubborn about it? is it the money? or you just dont like to admit you doing it wrong?

I'm "cutting corners" by not using the same things you guys use. To some I'm cutting no corners and keeping my pets normally.
You act like there is 1 way to keep fish, and that if I don't follow that I'm cutting corners.
This is what annoys me about some of you.

if you;ve got ammina and nitrite "between water changes" that because you are not doing your job properly as a fish keeper, do you not realise that?

any having tanks with no filters is just madness as i have read in your profile, where do you live? i feel like posting you a filter LOL

I hardly ever use my test kit because I know all my tanks are stable.I do however randomly test each tank a couple of times a year.Once your tank is established there isn't much of a point in having one unless you have a random death. Also I too, as t1tanrush, use undechlorinated water. No problems atall there, ime the chlorine/chloramine is so little it obviously does not effect the filters....I really couldn't care, it works for t1tan.Saying statements like "i cant believe there are people out their who take so little interest in their fish's well being, if they trying to save money, i get a better idea SELL YOUR TANK, SELL YOUR FISH, THEN SELL YOURSELF  "
-will not solve anything.

nor will having no filters Cheese feet, that wont solve anything, nor will your post, nor will any of our posts B)

I have purchased filters for both my large tanks, my profile is from months ago, like 8 or something. Now I have a 40g filter on my 20g because it was overstocked, and a 10-20 on my 10 gallon african clawed frog (recently disconnected as it malfuncioned durring a power outage, and it bugged my frog so I'm not bothering to fix it...) Of course my betta does not get one, the tank is too small and it doesn't warrant a fitler (its a large jar)

Oh snap thanks for the support cheesey feet! Finally people are popping up supporiting another methods of fish keeping and not just 1 accepted method. Woo go go go don't be afraid to stand up for yourselves!

I'm very new to all of this... but one thing seems constant so far -- no one agrees on the best way to take care of fish! haha.

At least for a beginner, the test kits make me feel like I am taking proper care of my fish. Once my tanks cycle and fish are happy -- I can see myself not testing very often.

Exactly, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate is nothing a good old water change can't fix

Its like saying "I'll just take my dog to the vet if it gets run over" instead of buying a leash.

I dont call that a technique. I've had enough of this nonsense. I'm off to bed. :zz
