Saving Money On Test Kits

I think everything worth saying has already been said. Once a tank is established and you know your fishes behaviour then it is not neccersary to test the water all the time. When you setting up, making changes or having problems then you really should check the water chemistry.

Personally When I'm stocking a new tank (after it has cycled). I check every day for 2-3 days after I add each group of fish. During the first two months of the tanks life (after cycling) I check everything once a week to make sure it is all stable. After a couple of months I will very rarely check the water unless I notice a change in the fish, sudden outbreak of algae or anything else out of the norm. I do occasion do random testing just to reassure myself.

I save even more money by following the method below:
1. Aquire money for test kit.
2. Spend money elsewhere where its useful.
3. Watch my tanks the oldskool way and keep my fish healthy.
4.
5. Profit.

commonly called the unseccesful way. or the loose all your fish to a mysterious cause way.

afishdude, that is BRILLIANT i totally 1000% agree, thats the best post i seen in a while, it made me laugh but its sooooo true, you get all these "old skool" types who basically cant be bothered to test their water, and because they have been "lucky" so far so they dont want to change their habits.

Old Skool, just another name for ignorant

T1tan; do you happen to know your PH? What Dechlor do you use?
Nope, nor do I use Dechlor although I used to use aquasafe before I realised its a waste of money

In all my years of keeping various fish, my hundreds of fish have all been " lucky ". I must be extremely lucky, or I use my technique correctly and it works.

i think a lot of people who know f*** all about ammonia keep Betta's

EDIT: thats not to say all betta keepers are ignorant but some just defy belief, they are truly trying to take fish keeping back to the dark ages, its slightly relevent to this thread as there are lot of twats keeping betta's and goldfish who know f*** all about fish keeping

keeping bettas with no test kit isnt a good choice, you absolutly need one for bettas.

I have kept bettas without one for a long time. My current one is nearing 6 months old without ever nearing a test kit, he has even had the chane to breed (then eat his babies..).

t1tanrush, i am tierd of arguing with you. you wont take anyone elses advice and just keep saying what works for you is what everyone should do and that your the only one thats right.
honestly nobody cares if you have fish live for a long time under ok conditions but newbies should alwase test there water, even experianced people test there water.

Other people on this forum use similar methods to you, but seem to have reason for doing so. It seems that you would rather argue than discuss. You appear to just not care about your fish. I'm glad i'm not one of your fish, thats all i can say.

I heard the advice posted on this forum and I disagree.... So no I'm not going to take advice I feel is BS?

look i say these to all fish keepers (although the extremely experienced and skilled can get away with not doing regular tests perhaps)

GET A TEST KIT for atleast ammonia and nitrite

you are already spending money on your hobby, its actually not that expensive to test the water once a week

why not? i really dont get it?

I understand ignorance and not knowing about ammonia and nitrite, but if you been on this forum for anything longer than a few weeks and have done some reading its just madness not to test. You can't SEE ammonia and nitrite and just because you fish are not all dead it doesnt mean everything is fine.

As far as i am concerned ALL fish in home aquaria should be living in an environment where ammonia and nitrite are 0.0 on a test kit

It makes me cringe when people say "my fish are behaving normal" thats why i dont buy a test kit.... maybe..... but why not be on the safe side and test? get to know how to manage really good bioligical filtration? Learn something?

Because I don't discuss I don't care about my fish? Terrible point you made and it fails terribly.

Why would I want to spend my hard earned money on it? Sure its safe, but I'd rather look and be able to visibly watch things and know for sure then guessing if they are ok based on a test kit...

AND ANYONE THAT DOESNT USE DECHLORINATOR FOR WATER COMING OUT THE TAP (unless they got RO or some other filter) IS PLAIN DUMB, I MEAN THAT, COMPLETELY NOT IN TOUCH WITH THE REALITY OF FISH KEEPING, better off getting a good scren saver on their PC of a tank full of fish,

i cant believe there are people out their who take so little interest in their fish's well being, if they trying to save money, i get a better idea SELL YOUR TANK, SELL YOUR FISH, THEN SELL YOURSELF

So the only way to show I care for my fish is to dump money into a test kit and dechlor? I'ved used undechlored water all my life with 0 problems from it, although i'm pretty sure I have very good water though...
Also, ever heard of letting the water sit overnight to dechlor it? There are more ways to dechlor than just a stupid product cupcake.
