Sand/gravel Mixed

In time i am thinking about getting a few catfish or similar and apparetly they like sand. Would it be possible to have half sand half gravel.Gravel on the back half and sand on the front section.... Im not sure if it would work or not. Has anyone tried it.

I've not tried it but have thought about it in the past, i think you would have to make a barrier to stop the sand moving and mixing in with the gravel, maybe silicone a piece of cut down juwel structured background rite across the middle of the tank.
