Rinse it off well scrub it down. Add it to you tank on a day where you will be home all day. the fish will not die the moment you add the rock. make sure you keep a close eye on the fish all day. If you see them act funny like rub on things swim at the surface then take the rock out and do a good water change your fish will be fine.

If you smash sandstone with a hammer (something which I have to do regularly in my job) you get sand. It's just compressed sand.

ive used it many times, no issue, don't use it if it is flaky though.
