If it's a tank of bright colourful fish you're after, like guppies, the betta is going to be a problem. If you consider housing that in it's own tank you will have many more options for the community tank.

Neons are excellent fish though. Don't be so down. The best thing you can do is learn how to keep fish with this little tank, and if it is to your liking, expand and get a bigger tank. Bigger tanks are actually much easier to keep as they give you a greater period of time to recognize an issue before it becomes a crisis.


If I were you, I would start saving up for a 50+ gallon tank. You seem to prefer the larger breeds of fish. I think a South American cichlid tank could be in your future. Just be sure to do all the proper research before making any purchases. Ask questions as you are, but don't get down if you get an answer you don't like. Just because certain options that you wanted don't work well, there are still some very nice alternatives!

Platies can be really nice fish. I have 3 females and a male along with my 8 guppies 2 neon tetra's and 2 oto's (my tank is about the same size as yours)

The platies are really easy going little fish. Totally non aggressive and very simple to look after. They come in various colours and they only grow to about 5cm max so won't get too big for your tank. The oto's will keep any algae under control as that's their main diet. They don't grow very big (about 1.5cm) but like to be in a small group (3 will be good in your tank)

It's already been said that the betta may take offence to guppies and attack them so it may be best to forget those.

The best thing would be to take your time. Don't rush out and get a group of fish all at once as you could end up with an ammonia or nitrite spike which could kill your fish.

I would just get a couple every other week, keep checking your water once or twice a week to make sure the ammonia isn't climbing up.

IMO that is too many fish for a 12 gallon

a funny think just happened my 2 little red platys where swimming and my fighting fish came over and like looked at them then it like did something with its tail like bent it round and the 2 little fish went under the tail and swam off and there still together now it like fathering them its cute . ? is that natural ?

Mike, you may need to watch your ammonia now. That's a lot of fish all at once for your filter to deal with. I would urge you to listen to the people here.

yeah but then he said he'd seen some fancy fighting fish and posted pics of guppys as illustrations.

I think it is a fair question to ask. He misidentified a guppy as a "fighting fish" earlier in the thread. It could be that he doesn't know what fish he actually has.

Please post pictures of your fish, if possible to ensure proper identification. Secondly, please be prepared to do water changes on a daily basis, as I don't believe your filter is ready to handle the bioload that you have. Test for ammonia and nitrite daily. If the levels are anything other than zero, be sure to complete a water change.

I have a fighting fish not a guppy ..... I can see the difference now between what I have and the pictures I posted and my tank will be cleaned every 1 - 2 week as it says in the book and I am keeping and good eye on my filter due to the amount of fish I have in there tah ks guys for your help .

And the water change will be daily ....
