Right Tank Sorted

i re did my tank taking fish back as people said yesterday i am now left with a red male siamese fighter and a Electric yellow cichlid .... i researched this on google and a few post's said they are ok together ... correct ? ... have all so kept my 2 red claw crabs .... sectioned off in underwater aquarium ... now what fish i can i add to my aquarium ? thanks a bunch for the info yesterday guys real help ... sorry if i sounded a little stupid .

the size ? i dont know ? it took 4 n half 15l bucket loads of water to fill ? i dont know what the conversion is ? and yeah they have been together since day one then i added new fish .... they do recommend i get another so they can be like " brothers " .

Didn't you say it was a 10 Gal before? That's about 40 litres, which means either your buckets aren't as big as you think they are or you were originally mistaken about the size. Get a tape measure or ruler and measure the length, height and width of the tank, we can work the volume out from there.

regardless of tank size, those two fish do NOT belong in the same tank. If anyone has given you that advice on other forums they are talking rubbish, I'm afraid to say.

The betta would be fine in there on it's own, with maybe a small group of small tertra or rasoborra.

Ok, about 58 litres or 12 gallons. Sorry to say but the cichlid is still too big to be in there, plus they have very specific requirements that are completely different from that of the betta. If you want to be keeping african cichlids successfully you'll need to be thinking of a much bigger tank (about 55 gal).

However, it IS a great size for a small tropical community, including the betta.

With you betta you need to be careful of aggressive fish and fin nippers, plus your betta's attitude towards other similar-looking fish. That puts guppies out of the equation, although I keep mine successfully with endler's livebearers so that's an option.

Good tankmates in a community tank of this size include:

A small shoal of small, peaceful tetras (ember, neon, perhaps glowlight etc)

Rasboras or microrasboras (chilli, galaxy, harlequin, lambchop)

Platies (although i would say it's too small for swordtails)

Ottos

Cories (probably pygmy would be best)

Kuhli loches might work? I'll leave that one to someone with more experience.

Shrimp can work with a betta, as can snails.

Too many fish for your tank here imo. Danios need much more room than your tank has. Cories are shoaling fish and need to be in numbers of 6 plus ideally. Gouramis are anabantoids and don't usually tolerate bettas (or bettas don't tolerate them!). Plus opalines are way too big. If you got rid of the betta you could have dwarf or honey gouramis though.

Every single fish in this pack is too big for your tank except MAYBE the cherry barbs. Red tailed black sharks are notoriously aggressive too.

Far too many fish here. Ditto the gourami problem, not enough cories, the danio problem, penguin tetras IMO get too big.

Just entirely unsuitable. Your tank is no way big enough for any of these cichlids. They would also rip the betta to pieces.

If you went with the idea of the 1st pack and got say, six or eight neons, plus 6 or so pygmy cories, that could work, but I;d really suggest you buy the fish seperately to get the right numbers and combinations to suit you.

Don't be gutted! You can have a variety of 'good looking' fish, you jsut have to choose suitable ones

I actually have a 50L tank myself, which has a betta, 3 male endlers livebearers, 10 chilli rasbora, a clown plec and god knows how many cherry shrimp. With bettas, they are definitely individuals, and whilst mine happily lives alongside shrimp, some might try to eat them. You could try adding amano shrimp instead of cherries because they;re bigger and a bit less likely to become snacks if your betta is a more aggressive one.

That's a good question, bit of a memory test there! Betta was about £3. Endlers livebearers about £2.50 each I think? Chilli rasbora about £2 each? Clown plec about £4. Cherry shrimp 50p each and we originally had six, now we have at least twenty. Oh and I forgot the two bamboo shrimp I moved from the main tank, probably about £2 each for those.

I didn't buy them all at the same time though! They've been bought over the course of a year or so. Betta is the oldest

can you buy all them fish in a local pet store or internet job ?
