Re-Learning Something I Lost

http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=113861. I think this is the link you are looking for. I have one question for you. I'm not being rude, just curious. If you have lost your sight, how are you going to maintain an aquarium? I know I probably shouldn't have asked this, but I know a few people who have lost their sight and they gave up their aquariums. I'd love to help them get back into the hobby if I can. If you don't want to answer my question, that's fine. And I'm sorry for asking such a personal question but....And a big WELCOME :good:

Hi Colleen

thanks for the link and no I don't think your rude asking me. to maintain the tank I have first found all the equipment you use with audio alerts etc so will set off an alarm if the temp goes below the guidelines and also sends alerts to remind you of water change etc if the PH hits a certain level etc. chemical testing can be done via a computer with a colour scanner etc and a computer program. the set up for the tanks are also going to be thought through differently. first the choice of fish. there are alot of species that you can hand feed so you will get the sensation of touch by interacting with the fish in that way as well as fish to avoid like corys (even though i am getting them) as they have a poisonous defence system if touched. cleaning the tanks again is very tactile so there will be things like sharp ornaments or rocks etc to avoid and tactile ones easy to clean. cleaning itself is again by touch. you can feel the difference between what is clean and what is dirty......e.g cleaning the glass you can feel a subtle dragging when it is dirty but then smooths when you have removed it. cleaning gravel etc there is an electrical "hoover" so you only remove debris and not the gravel/fish because of the special filter it uses. using black gravel or sand and a black background against "white/silver" fish like dollars is good for those with some vision as it creates a high contrast in colours.

the list goes on and on as there are also so many tips and tricks i have learnt over the years. I am writing a full diary from the very start choosing the tank etc to looking after the fish whch is also going to be used by the RNIB to show others with sight loss how much they can gain from tanks but will also do it as a diary online which i will set up in about a weeks time and will stick the link on my profile.

always feel free to ask me anything cos i never see it as omeone being offensive but helping others to either learn or raise awareness how things can be done without sight

xxxxx

Thank you so much for your responce. I already use the touch method when cleaning the glass on my tanks to some extent. I have to say, you amaze me. I will be watching for your online diary and following it very closely. It's my hope that you can inspire a few people I know. You've already inspired me. Thank you.

always feel free to ask anything and i hope it helps to get your friends who used to have fish to try again xx

Hello and welcome to our forum Branwyn..... I just know you're going to enjoy your stay. We have a lot of very helpful and knowledgable people on this forum and thanks'for choosing us to help out..... We're looking forward to those pictures when you're ready.

thanks Ludwid.

might be a bit of a delay though as I am not sure my stands are strong enough for the 2 x 55 gallon tanks so going to get better ones next month after reading some posts on here where stands have given way. i rather over compensate and wait an extra 4 weeks for the new stands and have peace of mind than chance it to see. still gives me more time to make more coconut caves etc and research my chosen fish better.

xx
