Hi all,

My rainbow shark Bruce, who until recently has always been quite sleek and slender (we've had him about six months) seems to have developed a very fat belly over the past few weeks. His behaviour is still totally normal otherwise. I was wondering is there something wrong with him, or potentially could Bruce be a Brucette and be egg laden?

The pics really don't do it justice, could not get a good angle but it was the best I could do.

could be eggs but could also be dropsy which is a build up of fluids inside the body cavity.
One way to check is to remove the tank hood, look down and if you can see a "pine cone" effect where the scales
around the belly or body are sticking out (not always the case) or he has pop eye then it's more than likely dropsy.
There are treatments available but they seldom work fast enough and the treatment is quite strong.
Dropsy is contagious and can spread.I would remove him/her from the tank and set up a hospital tank where you can treat and monitor the fish's health.
On the otherhand if the fish has eggs then it should drop them soon or may even reabsorb the eggs.

Thanks for the reply, I know what dropsy looks like and all the scales are flat and smooth so I really don't think it's that. Maybe he is a Brucette after all!
