Chops is now in one of the big tanks and is doing fantastic, he seems happy enough and is really smitten with the clown loach for some reason

The problem is when I go near the tank, he swims up and down the glass, so close to it he rubs his eyes on the glass and around the edges its starting to turn white  I have stopped putting my hand on the glass to say Hi (he loved me doing that in the qt tank) but he constantly rubs up and down the glass, I can see his eye moving inwards as he is pressing on the glass so hard. Trouble is all my tanks are cheap umpteen hand old tanks with scratches on them and I think the scratches are damaging his eyes. Further problem is if I dont keep going into the front room to say hi to him, he lies on the bottom sulking. I think I have over spoilt him with attention when he was in the QT tank in the kitchen, I use to just lift the cover and put my hand in and he would nudge my hand, its a bit harder in the tank he is in now as I have to take the lid off, move the lights then slide the glass across the top, he is too impatient and has jumped a few times and banged his head on the glass slider.

Ow bless him. He was so starved of attention when you rescued him, that he is totally smitten with you now. It's going to be hard I know but try and stay away from the tank so much, this may help. Or get him a lady friend other than that I'm not sure what you can do or do they make fish safety goggles.

I have never heard of such a "special needs" fish !!

It's an awkward problem. I can't think of an easy solution. Maybe, distracting him from wanting your attention by giving him other fishy company, and maybe a girlfriend (as suggested by Littlemenkey above).

He has other fishy company. I am not going so close to the tank, just waving at him (god I sound nuts  ). I had to change the heater in the tank today, hubby was helping (I got him to hold the plug so he felt usefull   ) and even he commented that Chops seems obsessed as the other fish were the other end of the tank while I was messing around but Chops never moved from my hands!!! its a good job he cant get out of the tank!

Its the kind of behaviour you would expect a neglected dog to show after he's come out of his shell with new owners, but hes a fish. I'm at a loss what to suggest except perhaps a female oscar would help him in the long run. Sounds like my old clowns won't be a good influence either haha, they spend all day rubbing their faces against the glass wanting food :p

man this oscar is crazy, if i could visit i would come to see him star4 lol, man hes really starting to make oscars grow on me, LOL, jeeze but i cant have him in my tank since they get too big, unleess i gave it away after about a year after it grows,

Thats exactly what he seems like, a neglected dog! Its so weird, I have 3 other oscars in the house and neither of them act as obsessed as Chops does. Maybe he needs longer to settle in the new tank. Just worried he might cause too much damage to his eyes, well if needed he can go back into the qt/hospital tank.

dont really know what to suggest for the eyes thing , but on a lighter note , if you were to get him a lady and they bred and had fry , imagine what a f----ed up dysfunctional family that would be

Was Chops ever doing this rubbing on the tank glass in QT?

Have to say your ongoing saga with this fella has really opened my eyes to these fish. I was in awe at Nelly's old pair (fully grown?) when I saw them at "fishsouth.co.uk"'s house when picking up Nelly's old 540l (in terms of seeing their size and potential power, compared to the tiny specimens often in shops), but Chops has shown an endearing personality!

No he didnt rub his eyes on the glass in the QT tank, just in this big one???

Fishy goggles & eye patches   I guess he is just going to be one crazy fish. Fingers crossed he doesnt do too much damage.
