well a friend of mine asked me yesterday to pick out an orange fish for him besides a goldfish to ask a girl out to prom, she already keeps fish (and hopefully she isnt here lol) but i do not know the tank size or the inhabitants,i went on the safe side a chose a school of gold barbs (5) and he said they were perfect and i was promised theyd go to a good home. idk, what hould i do i have yet to buy them but ill be picking them up in 4 hours

Gatecrash the prom, get your mate so drunk that he falls asleep. Get talking to this lady and offer to take her home at the end of the night. Keep her talking until she's unconscious and then check out the tank situation. If you don't like what you see, fish them out and go home.

Sounds like a bad idea to me to be honest, if it was my tank I would want to stock it with fish that I wanted but each to their own....

thats another problem i dont know if she just has it for the heck of it (another friend has one because of feng-shui or whatever, its a 20 gal. with 5 glass cats) or if she is taking it more serious like say you or me. he said that he'll give em back to me if she says no, but ill end up returning them (i already have 5 and i do not want more) but im sure she'll say yes and she'll probably keep the fish because its from him. i just dont know the tank size, i know is that its at least 10 gallons. she has no cichlids just normal community fish but he hasnt seen the tank either.

If he wants orange fish, a pair of swordtails or platies might be a better choice. First, because you would only need two of them and second, because they are definitly peaceful fish who would get along well in her community. Be sure to print out the address of this forum too and invite her to join. If she has any problems with overstocking, cycling, etc. she will be able to quickly get the help she needs.

I agree with the platy pair idea. Adding 5 new fish at once could result in serious overstocking, especially if it;s a small tank/

oof i really wish you guys posted ealier i left aminute after i posted,went to my study session then at 4 my time bought 5 small gold barbs and a breeder container to keep them isolated from my fish, and i was right in doing so they were 1" mine were 3" and had yet to be fed. i made sure they were small (and they didnt have any ther orange fish except for an albino oscar and goldfish, all their live bearers were different colors and what-not) so as to not have as much impact. and i was planning on telling my friend to tell her to join jic.

lol ive heard it all now you should suggest that he mans up and just asks her out!! then if all gos well and they end up dating , he could take her for a little surprise trip to the lfs so she can pick out her own fish , which she would probably appreciate more too

well he asks her on tuesday and he told me his plan

1: place fancy box with fish in it outside classroom with a note that says "i know this sounds fishy but follow the bait"
2: knock teachers door, techer finds box, gives to girl
3: girl reads note and goes out of class to find "bait"
4: she finds a box of chocolates but everytime she tries to grab it it gets reeled back
5: eventually she chases the box all the way to guy which then asks her out

That plan is seriusly weird. Hope the teacher finds and passes the fish on to the girl quickly. And where will the fish stay until the girl can take them home? Hope they won;t be left all day in a small box with no heater or filter or they will be dead by the time she gets them home.Takethose poor fish back to lfs immediately and tell your friend to stick to chocolates!

I'd have written an IOU - "this ticket entitles the bearer to her choice of 5 (suitable) fish from Blah fish store". That way she's not having fish shoved on her that she doesn't necessarily want or need, but it still shows he's thought about it. Or after a couple of dates take her to choose some herself as a surprise like someone else suggested.

Having said that, my hubby got me a new fishy after my middle child was born (and brought him home on the back of his motorbike LOL), and I really loved it although I guess he had the advantage of having seen the tank so could tell the staff what I had and how big etc...

Just hope the whole thing doesn't backfire!

the fish are being kept in a breeder box in my tank at the mo since they are much to small and my gold barbs just chased them when i tried sticking them in the main tank.

the teachers in on it too lol

and my mom will hopefully be able to bring the fish after 2nd period (it occurs at 4th period and the scheduale for that day is 2,4,6)
if not then yes they might have to endure the whole 6 hour day in a box with a fair bit of water in it ill make sure.

gold barbs are pretty temp tolerant ranging from 80-60 so they should be fine and hopefully there will be enough O2 for them.

btw theyll be in a box for stress purposes, lots of people at my school.
