hi ,

i am going to be posting some fish soon , and wanted to know if anyone has any real do's and dont's .

i wondered who you use to post ?

what boxes ?

what heat pack's

if you have had any problems of your fish turning up dead ?

i want to find out what is the best way to post fish so they dont get too stressed or worse , ?

also by law are you allowed to post "livestock" ?

thanks

don't use paper envelopes :)

pack the fish in plastic bags and use 2 bags instead of one. Put the fish in a bag and seal it up. Then put that bag in another one and seal it up.

use a foam esky to send the fish and the temperature should stay warm enough. Line the esky with a big plastic bag and put all the smaller bags of fish into the big bag. If the fish are going to be in the esky for a while (a day or more) and they are in a cold climate, then use a heat pack or a bag of warm tank water. Put the bag of warm tank water in the middle of the bags of fish. If sending fish by air then use a heat pack in a towel rather than a bag of water. Air freight is expensive and you want as little weight as possible.

If sending fish by air have 1/4 water and 3/4 air in the bag.
If sending by car or truck then use 1/3 water and 2/3 air in the bags.

Don't feed the fish the day before they are packed up and sent. This will allow them to clean out their system and they will be less likely to poo in the bags and create ammonia problems.
You can also add ammonia absorbing granules to bags with freshwater fish in. This can help prevent ammonia levels from building up in the bags. These granules do not work in saltwater.

Do a partial water change a few days before you send the fish. The fish travel better in clean water and if the tank has had a water change a few days before the fish are sent, the water in the bags should be cleaner and the fish travel better.

If sending big fish, aggressive fish or cichlids, then bag them individually. One fish per bag. Small peaceful cichlids and baby rift lake cichlids can be packed together. But pack bigger more agro fish on their own.

tape up the corners is the only thing I could add to that so as the fish dont get trapped in the corner.
