One of my mates reckons that the waste my fish produce would act as a really good fertilizer although I'm doubtful, wouldn't it just cause a rise in ammonia once it starts to decompose. Substrate is sand by the way.

i tend not to hoover around my plants. just leaving any little bits that fall at the bottom of the pant wont hurt.

edit - as mentioned below, my plants have no food source other than fish poo and food.

the waste your fish produce can aid plant growth. Some low-tech planted tanks rely soley on fish waste to feed the plants. However, this does not remove the need for regular gravel vacuuming and removal of excess waste.
