I have a couple plants, that I recently have been starting with a root tab, just to get them going faster… I’m fond of my stump pots, either ceramic, or resin, and what has worked exceptionally well for me, is only filling the pot 1/2 way, or a little more, with substrate, and letting the rest of the pot slowly over time fill with mulm / aquarium bio waste… I have a nice coffeefola, that I nearly killed, I was heart broken, when I set the pot over night, on a hang on back filter cover, while I tried to catch a couple of fish particularly resilient to being caught, and some of the aquatic foliage dried out… it’s coming back, but this plant had never had a fertilizer, but has grown exceptionally well for me… only explanation is that the mulm has what the plant needs to grow well…

this is that plant today, the right side lost a good portion of it’s leaves, but there are 2 new ones, so it’s coming back… you can see down into the pot from this angle, and it’s only about 1/3 full so it collects mulm and fish waste m, that the plant seems to make good use of…

I would be very mulm tolerant if not for my very soft water. If I leave it around, it seems to be an ideal habitat for oodinium spp parasites. In water with more minerals, I never had this problem, but I have to assume the parasite is in tanks and not dangerous below a certain population level. Some fish species are "velvet" magnets and others are unbothered by it.

Many killies (not all), Microctenopoma and some of the small Betta species are really prone.
