Platy Acting Strange

Hello, my male platy has been acting strange for about four months. It began with what seemed to be fits at the top of the tank where he would swim rapidly then seisure - literally seize up with tail point upward, nose upward...bent and awkward. After a few minutes, he would snap out of it. After a few days I found that he was swimming at the surface and seemed oblivious to the other fish. I moved him to a ten gallon hospital tank for two months, and he has now graduated to a 1.5 gallon that he lives in with a baby (his granddaughter actually).
He used to be shy but now he is bold...acts like he is blind at times, but responds to hand movement. Eats like a horse but spends most of his days at the surface. Sometimes clenches his tail but no other evidence of discomfort. I am wondering if he possibly had a stroke. I have treated him with another molly in the bigger tank with a variety of treatments, but moved him out as I dont believe it has effected him and really is more harm than good. thoughts?

Sorry to hear about your fish. There used to be some TFF members good with diagnostics over in the emergencies section, I hope we've still got some people watching out over there or you could also post in the livebearer section.

Are your tank stats all good? Are you measuring them with liquid-reagent based tests and if so what kinds of numbers do you get (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate?)

Thanks Waterdrop. As fate would have it, he is having a fit at this very moment. I thought internal parasites and tried what was recommended by our fish stores. Metro+, tetracycline, general cure, all of that. I am still leaning toward internal parasite, but the closest the LFS has come to meds for that is the Metro+ and I dont know...maybe should try again. Water is good...he was in a 26g before the 10g and now the 1.5g and his symptoms are unchanged. Other fish are happy and although I havent test parameters on hospital tanks, they are low load and get very regular water changes. I will try the live bearer page also, thank you. I hate to lose him but no one I have talked to over the past five months has any advice other than he "may just be a little off".

36gallon - loaches, molly, platy, serpae tetra, neon, cardinals - operating for 10 months
26gallon - molly's, platy's, loaches - up for one year one month
10 gallon - molly in hospital tank - up for five months
1.5 gallon - platy and baby platy - up for two months

Sounds like you are on top of it. Sounds sick to me, not just "off."

Fish can also look bloated.
Enlarged anus. Red inflamed anus.
Fish will sometimes swim on there sides.
Long stringy white waste, clear mucas waste, red waste.
Bent spine, curvature of spine.
Spinning in circles.

I would suggest worming your fish.

Bent spine, being thin, can also by symptoms of fish tb.
The only way you can really determine fish tb is by having tests done on a dead fish.

I always find it best to worm Livebarers for camallanus worms.
