Now now lets not detract from the question asked which was pH levels being high and would they be harmful? Choose your fish carefully and if your lfs stocks locally bred fish stocks they should already be acclimatised to your local water so shouldn't cause a problem. You could add a diy co2 kit as it reportedly reduces pH and will help your live plants to grow.
