You should be doing weekly water changes.

Don't worry gouramis like to explore. After a while they get used to their enviroment and they'll come out to you all the time.

Sometimes I I will do it weekly other times bi weekly. They never go longer then 2 weeks with out a change. I guess I will shoot for weekly .
