Checked my tank tonight and found a load more guppy babies merrily swimming around the top and bottom of my tank.these are the third generation but the latest are really pale like lemons their mum is all orange
so i'm hoping they will be also.
The first ones are just getting some colour alot are half black.
The first batch are now 45 days old when will i be able to spot the difference between the males and females so that i can seperate them before they start their own breeding programme?

At 45 days, they are close to starting their own breeding program. By now you should be able to sex most of the fry.

ok thanks. i have been looking for the males gonopodium (sorry if i got spelling wrong)
All i can see at the moment are the normal anal fins they can't all be females can they?
Another tank now up and ready.

They are likely not to be all one sex if you have 6 or more. On a guppy around that age, you start seeing early signs of the ultimate coloring which usually only shows up quite that early in a male. You probably need to wait 2 more weeks to see the beginning changes to a gonopodium.

Thanks for the info oldman
Theres a few with coluring coming up so i will segregate those ones first.
Had a word with my lfs they said that they can take some for me which is good.

you just need to seperate them fast. you`ll end up getting in-breeds and be over run with very unhealthy fry for which you will have to make a life or death decision for :(

sorry

sorry
if you end up over run with unhealthy fry. it's probably because
1. a poor selection of fish to start with.
2 some common problems incorrect feeding. incorrect tank temperature and water changes.
3. the problem is not in-breeds but a lack of understanding of fish

I am sitting with thousands (10 thousands) of guppies all stemming from my original 2 males and 5 females dating back to approximately 1995.... (many generations) Maybe I was just lucky that only the best of the genes survived, but anyone and everyone getting guppies from my stocks has one comment... "Your guppies do not die"...

I'm with fish48 and Ludwig. I have a tank of guppies that started out with one pregnant fish store female and has since turned into 100s of guppies, all of which are free from deformity and as healthy as can be.

my lfs almost always has chocolate gouramis, and i always think of you, LV whenever i see them there.
shame you cant get any in SA>
cheers!
