One Quick Question About Cycling..

As some of you know.

for xmas im getting a 5 gallon...

To speed up cycling will it work if i add some of my other 60L tank water?

Then add a LFS Betta and when i order the Halfmoon remove the LFS betta to my community tank..

Would this work?

Or Not?

oh what about

50% Tap water + conditinor

50% Old tank water

the water will have no impact on the cycle of the filter as the bacteria colonises on the filter media, little on the substrate etc. you will be better off putting both filters in 1 tank and seeding the new one from the old one. also a betta isnt really a good idea in a com tank, it may well get very stressed and you will never see it as it will hide away. you could also add some media from the old filter into the new to help it mature faster

If you have a cycled tank, start a fishless cycle on the new one by washing the old filter in the new tank with the new filter running to pull in any bacteria that are released. Mine are usually cycled within a week when I do that.

yeah media as in sponges, ceramics etc etc basically anything thats inside your filter you will be better off using all new water as the old water will contain nitrates etc etc so fresh water is your best bet. if moving 1 fish from 1 tank to another then just make sure you acclimatise it in a bag and add water from the new tank in small amounts as you would a new fish. if the temp is the same and your pH etc should be the same unless you buffer it so the only difference will be things like nitrate levels etc in the water but its best to settle the fish in instead of just plonking them in....

If i do that how am i ment to Keep the other tank running

+ my mom brought some fish cyle... would that work inside speed up cycling?

fish cycle or bacteria in a botle is a waste of time as most people here will tell you. what oldman means is to keep your first tank running but set up the new tank. remove the filter sponge and squeeze it clean in the new tank releasing bacteria and probably some crap but dont worry about that as it will get cleared by the new filter. replace the sponge in your old tank and put the betta in the new tank. keep an eye on water stats, ammonia, nitrite etc in the new tank and the tank should be fine especially with just 1 fish

i have two sponges?

I remove one from the old filter

put it into the new one?

or as im doing a water change next time JUST take the psonge's upstairs sqeeze them into the new tank the m put them back in?
