Hello all,

Ive had my neons just under a week, I have 12 of them but spotted a tiny spot on one of the tails. The fish seems fine, sticking with others and swimming around can you advise? Is this just a blemish?

I could be wrong but that looks a lot like the beginning of an ich outbreak.

Would it be worth "removing" it from the tank just incase? All water perimeters are fine fish looks healthy to me as well :(

If you have a QT tank, or the option to return it to where you got it I would. And then closely watch the other fish for small white spots.

If i was you I would treat the tank asap with whatever med you prefer. I jyst went through a 5 week battle, luckily i didnt lose any fish. I used 3 diff meds and found that Esha Exit worked best for me.

I have been watching my fish very closely tonight and the little white mark has gone of its tail. I dont want to add meds for no reason, if it is ich how quickly will the spot return?

Unfortunately Peter, with Ich. These spots do eventually fall off the fish, releasing many parasites into the water, which will eventually latch onto other fish, causing more spots. This is how Ich (white spot) works. I find raising the temperature slightly and using the salt method. However I don't know your tanks' stock, some fish aren't tolerable of salt.

If I were you, I'd get some meds asap, not sure which is best or what is available; but the quicker this is dealt with, you are far more likely to keep your fish.

P.S. I have Cardinal Tetras/Neons and this small spot on the dorsal fin has been quite common in a few of my fish, which didn't lead to an outbreak of Ich. It may however be scarring from a previous white spot. (Yes, they occasionally leave scars on the fish).

I've got a problem I think. Been keeping a very close eye on them and after getting in from work tonight one of my clowns has 2 white spots, cherry barb has 2 spots and is flashing against the bog wood. Five banded barb is also flashing but no signs of spots. All seem to be acting normal and will be feeding them later to see how they eat but I take it there is ich in the tank :(

What's best to treat it? Would just salt work? Kind of putting me off the fish keeping idea :(

Stock is:

12 neons, 5 cherry barbs, 6 five banded barbs, 4 clown loaches and 6 zebra danios.

I couldn't personally really advise you on salt treatment but you should really start some sort of treatment asap as it won't get any better! As I mentioned above I took 5 weeks to clear my tank but the ich was only ever visible on only a few fish, each with only a few spots. After my experience I would use Esha Exit whitespot treatment the good thing about this is that you can if you need run Esha 2000 at the same time which treats finrot (I ended up getting a little on a couple of fish which I read can happen when whitespot appears).

Don't panic just start treatment asap and I'm sure you will be ok.

As was stated earlier, the spots will fall off, releasing more of the disease into the tank.

Keeping fish is like keeping any other pet. Sometimes they will get sick and you as a responsible pet owner need to treat them. Get some of the ich treatment mentioned above and start treating your tank. Easy peasy. Keep the water clean, don't panic, and they'll be fine.

I just dont want to add chemicals to the tank if not needed....

I have just fed them all and every fish was going crazy for food,

Which treatment would you all recommend for me to treat with?

I've already mentioned one that I use in my previous post there are several you could use such as Waterlife Protozin (wasn't effective for me, but is generally rated as a good med). But to be frank, you need to treat TODAY as it looks like you have possibly had ich in the tank for the last 4 days. If it's not ich then you won't do any harm to your fish by treating with medicine, far better to be safe than sorry!!!

Thanks for all your advice everyone!

Ive been out on my lunch today to get some Protozin treatment. Got up this morning and once of my loaches has about 6 spots on it and was flashing a bit so had to act. Ive got the temp up to 26 degrees now and when I got home I did my usual 30% water change doing a good vac of the gravel and removed the carbon from my filter. I stuck some more biomax in the filter in place of the carbon so help with the bacteria.

All the fish looked ok swimming in the flow of water when topping it up again but have gone a little wild now ive put the first dose of treatment in but hope they will calm down soon :(

Ive added my stock to my signature now. My question is will 26 degrees be ok with my fish? If the treaatment finishes but I still have spots should I just start the treatment again? (Does on day 1,2,3 & 6)

Thanks for your help!

Yes, keep treating if whitespot is sill visible and even if it's gone in the first week I personally would treat for another week to be safe. There are some persistent strains of whitespot out there if you do some web browsing you will find some articles. That's why I ended up changing meds. But hopefully if it's cleared in one week as I said above, treat for a second week to be sure you have eradicated it.
