Not Sure About Stock...?

Hi Guys

I'm in the middle of my fishless cycle (awaiting the drop of my nitrite), so thought I would start looking at what type of fish to get when my tanks ready!

Thing is... I'm not really sure where to start.

I do know the following though:

I have a rena zeneo 30L - holds 27 Litres / 7 US Gallons

It's open top

I don't want breeders

I have sand as a substrate

Here's a pic (this isn't mine though)

I was thinking : 3 x male fancy guppies
1 x cherry shrimp
and maybe something else? something that doesn't mind being on it's own

What are those little 'sucker fish' called? The ones that stick to the glass in the tank?

I'm really not sure, I want to have a nice pretty and bright tank if possible

Looking good so far.

The 'sucker' fish you mean are plecs but I'd say the tank is probably just too small for any of them, you can get small plecs but I'd say 27L would still be too small.

One thing that would go fine in the tank would be a small group of Pygmy corys, they are smaller than normal corys so a group of 4-6 would be fine.

Or you may have meant an Otocinclus (Oto) - it would fit, but they love to live in groups.

If it were 'cool water tropical' and had decent enough flow, you ight get away with a honkong loach...

But how about shopping around to see if you can pick up som tiny rasboras, or maybe croaking gourami?

Could prob go for a few more shrimp, will eat the uneaten food and they dont produce much waste.

Sucker fish are plecos most will go grow far too big, could look into a clown pleco but theyd still be better off in a bigger tank.

Could also look into getting a nice betta instead of guppies, with a few shrimp, they are very interesting fish just don't be too hasty with running down to p@h to buy one wait till you find a cracker

10 x cherry shrimp

Once they settle in, you could get some more guppies (I'd say 3-4 more).

You could squeeze more in but a lightly stocked, well decorated tank looks far better than one that's crammed with fish.

I would definatley prefer a smaller stock tank, I don't want to cram them in there! Bless 'em!

I would boost the shoal to 6 and stick with 3-4 male guppies and (initially) no shrimp.

If all is stable after a couple of months and your nitrates are not getting too high too quick, maybe think about a handful of small shrimp then.

What about 5 pygmy cories for the bottom, 6 microrasboras (e.g. galaxies o boraras species) and 1 honey gourami?

Keep a close eye if keeping just male Guppies as they can nip at each others fins. I kept 4 in a 30 litre tank and they started nipping at each other. One of them lost most of his caudal fin and I had to remove him. Moved them to a 180 litre tank and upped the number to 9, just to have the same problem.

i saw a tank like that once that had a betta and some endlers. It looked amazing. Betta kept endler population in check

Thats a shame to hear about your male guppies

I think I'll go to the LFS and have a look at them and see how they are in the tank, check they are healthy etc...

The idea of just some pygmy corys and guppies together is nice

If you are going for shrimp, you may want to consider some kind of lid or small netting for the top. They may well climb out at some point, sneaky little buggers they are

Just a quick note as well, if you are planning on keeping the tank open top then make sure that its not kept in a room that you use air fresheners or any other chemicals in the air as they will contaminate the water and likely kill the fish.
