The BGA is back again. :grr:

Spreading across the gravel and decor as we speak. So far has only hit the fake ornaments, not the bogwood, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

Last blackout was foiled by the cats who couldn't handle not seeing the fish for a few days and ripped a giant hole in the front of the black bin liners covering the tank on Day 3.

Planning a 50% water change and fert dose today. Then will try another blackout.

I am slowly losing the will to live with this.

just remind us what you have been advised to do previously?

Ok.

I wanted to improve the condition of the plants, so I started reading PARC, and read up about ferts, turnover etc, and also algae problems. Diagnosed BGA, and posted a thread asking a couple of questions. Did a blackout, although I doubt I did it properly as I had no bin liners at the time so used black towels and also didn't scrub the algae off beforehand as there was no mention of doing that on the James' Planted Aquarium link.

Needless to say, blackout made no difference, so then asked about maracyn in another thread and was convinced not to do that and to give blackout another go. Can't get hold of maracyn from a vet, so if I were to buy it I'd have to do it online. Rather not have to if I can avoid it as I don't like using drugs for the family or myself if I can help it, and the fish are no different. Took all decor out and scrubbed it, trimmed algae-covered leaves, placed tape over the substrate, and started another blackout, intended to do it for 5 days, but apparently the cats just couldn't manage 5 days and ripped the bin liners off the front of the tank after just 3 days.

Have been keeping a close eye since then - the plants are doing well with the macro as well as micro ferts, new growth is occurring on all plants. However, the BGA is now spreading again, across the gravel and across the decor. It's not much, but it's increased significantly in the past 3-4 days.

Think it's going to have to be a double blackout: 5 days, 1 day off, then another 5 days.

If that doesn't work then I quit.

My sons tank was getting smothered in it within a day or so of cleaning it off and a weekly water change but after adding a huge portion of hornwort it never came back lol, dunno why :)
