Not A Tropical But Still Cool

Picked up a sweet 55 gallon all glass aquarium this weekend at a local garage sale..Came with an undergravel filtration system, stand and lights. Got it for 25 dollars!!! Took the time and cleaned and re-siliconed the corners. Went to my local concrete/ready-mix center and picked up two five gallon buckets of beautifully colored pea gravel, brought it home, washed it and poured it in..Also Cleaned a few super cool pieces of my cholla wood and layed it in there with a few river rocks..And in went the Brook trout..They are soooooo happy now!!!! It's beautiful, and by far my husband and I's favorite tank to date!!

Thank you soo much!! We are so thrilled with the way it turned out as well. And I'll tell you what, that gravel is amazing..And we got those two bucket's full for only two dollars...CHEAP!! I'll never go back to aquarium gravel after the way this turned out lol..Unless it's aqua sand or something of course.

Ya the tank was a lucky find for sure..But I am broke 90% of the time, so i really just try to use my imagination and use the natural things that I have around my house..Most any kind of rock can be used doesn't just have to be aquarium rock, that's the way I try and think..I saw a bag of the same gravel at a lfs yesterday and they wanted 22 dollars for a 10lb bag. And all because it was cleaned..So i'll just keep getting the dirty stuff and cleaning it myself lol...And remember garage sales are a gold mine for this kind of stuff..

Thank you so much!! Ya, they are considered an evasive species here in Montana because they are not a native fish, and they are starting to poison them in our streams. So my husband and I went to a stream they were about to poison and caught these three to keep. I just love them and think they are a beautiful fish. And they have such a great personality. They eat earthworms right out of my hands now..lol

Sounds great! That wood is awesome!! The gravel adds to the natural feel and effect. How big do these get btw? Are you hoping to breed if they will?

My school did this years back. We got a sunfish, a rock bass and assorted smaller fish. These all went together with a pair of red ear slider turtles. It was a fantastic looking tank for years. Recently, the fish died - presumably from old age after being in the tank for 4-5 years. Then we moved the turtles in our eco-center inside a courtyard in the school. (That's where the large rocks in my tank are actually from.) All were locally caught, except for the turtles. They were donated by students who no longer wanted them, as was the tank. All the substrate came from local creeks - same ones where we got the fish.

they,ve been known to get up to nine pounds, but one's in mountain streams here have a type of dwarfism where they don't get but maybe seven to ten inches at most..don't think they will spawn in captivity but you never know i guess
