Hi, Ive just set up a new tank a few weeks ago and already have had breeding success.

Has this ever happened to anyone and is this a common ocurance or rare.

Cheers

Chris

It depends upon the species.

If you are talking livebearers (guppies, mollies, platies) then yes, it's a very common occurrence. There are also some other species, such as convicts and kribensis where the fish will readily breed.

It is also possible that you purchased a fish that was already pregnant if these are new fish for you.  I have also rehoused my Giant Danios and they bred very quickly after moving.

I'm having surprising success with Cherry Barbs breeding (and the fry surviving) in a community tank! The water parameters and feeding schedule must be just right for them, because I've heard you have to spend lots of time getting things perfect for them to breed.
