New Tank, New World.

^ I just isolated the red discus, then the blue turquise decided to take his place and assult the yellow.

So I isolated both the naughty ones for an hour and rescaped the tank a TINY bit. (I actually ended up stuffing up and the silicone come off the driftwood and it's anchor which was 2 tiles.) I'm missing a piece of driftwood until I resilicone it. When I put it in I might lay this one down horizontally.

Hopefully they act good now I've put them both back in.

If they're naughty again they'll get a smack!

lol, I am going through a similar issue.

My firemouth who was the boss is now trying to hide inside a plant to escape assault...he's not eating too well either for being afraid...it doesn't help that the van the shop would be delivering my tank with has a major engine fault (big ends) so I didn't get it Friday last week....here's hoping it turns up this Friday...

Cichlids.....it's a love / hate relationship for all :)

Rather than fin slapping I'd be tempted with a small version of a cattle prod, something with about the same kick as an electric catfish :)

New pics since the driftwood incident...

Bit of a re-scape.

I lost an Angel and 3 Tetra! I think it was due to a pH spike :-(

Anyways I hope you like the new photos and layout of the tank... The discus seem to be getting along well now!

Glad to hear they're getting on now...

What do you think caused the pH spike? One piece of driftwood not being in the tank for a bit?

Thanks for the compliments this is my 2nd tank and I have worked hard at it. Still some more planting to do and a background and maybe another nice discus to go!

I think it was the fact that one piece of driftwood went missing and I did a 1/4 water change as well. The water here isn't great for fishkeeping.

I've had a massive piece of bogwood sitting in a 60L tub for a week or so, the pH dropped from 7.75 to 7.5 at most....I think I'll try peat slugs when I setup the tank, I just want a flat 7....

You have high KH too?

You using anything other than the driftwood to hold the pH down?

To be honest I haven't really noticed the driftwood do anything. I have a chemical to bring the pH down which I have to use pretty much every water change. Really annoying. My tapwater would be at about 7.5-8.5 and when trying to get it and keep it at 6.0 it's a very hard task!

Better suited for african cichlids just like me :)

I do wonder whether I should get into that side of cichlids....my default water parameters would suit them much better, but I have my lovely CA/SA cichlids so that's that

Peat slugs won't give you a 'solid 7', but they will definately bring the pH down to a 6. I've just bought some and had them in for nearly a week now. The only downside is that they tint the water brownish.

James :)

Ah, better than I expected, too good infact as it just won't suit some of the fish...thanks for the heads up
