yep,it means the carbon in your filter.

If your filter cartridge has carbon in it, then yes.

However, if the cartridge has foam stuff around it, then I would be cautious in doing this, as this is most likely where the your beneficial bacteria are, and removing them is only going to cause problems.

A filter is a must in a healthy, established aquarium. If that is your case, then I would not remove the filter cartridge then.

What kind of filter are you using and how long have you had your tank with fish set up?

Also, there are other means of getting rid of algae, ones that consist of not adding any chemicals.

I would post in the planed tank section here on the forum to ask what you can do to get rid of the algae without the use of chemicals.

Also describe what type of algae you have so the members will be able to help you with it.

Whereas the trigger for algae can be identical for many types of algae (simply light and traces of ammonia,) the understanding of the particular type of algae your tank happens to get and some of the more specific things that might help get rid of it more easily and keep it away are highly specific to the type of algae. There are indeed many good discussions of this in the planted section and pinned articles and links that help.

The algae is not that bad i just am the type of person to get it under controll before it gets bad

If your filter cartridge has carbon in it, you could potentially cut open the filter cartridge and remove the carbon, that way you are not loosing the benefical bacteria on the foam. Also, a snail is a great way to help keep algae under control, they are not expensive and if you do not over feed you don't run the risk of over population.

Bear in mind that algaecides probably aren't great for fish either.

You should either just scrub the algae, and maybe get some snails to eat it, or use plants/lighting times to eliminate it.
