New 475L Tank... (It's Arrived!)...

my only concern would be the tetras with the sevs when they are adult, but apart from that it seems good. ive never kept the 2 together but if a fish can fit inside another fishes mouth then it could be a risk

Yea, that was my initial thought. I still think I'll go for the Tetras though, lovely fish and full of colour.

Matt - PM coming your way.

I've decided to try and stick to a SA biotope...

...... 2 Bushfish
By "Bushfish" I assume you mean Ctenopoma acutirostre, which are from SE Asia and Africa. Also They will eat all your cardinals and probably your emperors too. THey are complete carnivores with huge mouths for their size.

Sevs and tetras often work out OK, if you grow the sevs up with them ... they often just don't see them as food, even though they are easily capable of eating them once adult.

Just stumbled across Heros notatus... Definitely getting one of these!

Yea, I think it looks pretty decent there.

I've spoke to John at ND Aquatics and he's getting my new tank made as a 'priority order'.

Hoping it'll be here next week, but that means I'll have to book another day off work :(

I've been having a think about my stocking, and I've decided to try and stick to a SA biotope...

Something like this:

TOP

10 Emperor Tetras Will get eaten by Bushfish or maybe the Severums
10 Cardinal Tetras Again will get eaten by Bushfish or maybe the Severums

MIDDLE

1 Red Dotted Severum
1 Rotkeil Severum
2 Bushfish
4 Geophagus sp. Tapajo Red Head

BOTTOM

6 Leopard CorysMay get eaten by Bushfish
6 Sterbai CorysMay will get eaten by Bushfish
6 Bronze CorysMay get eaten by Bushfish
2 Sun CatsToo big, a 650L tank is OK for 1 Sun Cat
1 SAE

You think that's okay or too much?

Ryan
Read above
And BTW, the Tetras are not Top dwellers, the Cardinal tetra is more of a bottom dweller.
And the Severum and Heros and Geophagus are all bottom dwellers

What about this
TOP
5 African Butterflyfish

MIDDLE
6 Silver Dollars/ Bala Sharks

BOTTOM
1 Heros notatus
1 Red Dotted Severum
1 Rotkeil Severum
2 Bushfish
4 Geophagus sp. Tapajo Red Head
12 Emerald Green /Brochis Cory
6 SAE

I agree with what your saying, but 6 Bala sharks?? They are a really active fish, 6 adult bala would be enough in a 8 foot tank with nothing else, let alone with 10's of other fish.

Watch this video for an idea of the size of adult Bala Sharks

too many big fish in this list for me..... adult silver dollars are huge and bala sharks are too big for this tank. also adding 6 SAE could equate to a mental tank, ive only ever been able to keep 1 SAE in a tank as they just chased each other too much although the tanks i have kept them in were smaller than Ryans  my bushfish never went for my corys so i would say that they are safe depending on their size.
i think the main fish in this tank are the sevs and geos and with a group of huge silver dollars amongst them will detract the eye from the main fish. another thing was the butterfly fish but having never kept them i dont know the temperament of them but arent they quite aaggressive towards fish at the surface? with sevs feeding at the surface this could cause problems. if anyone has done this combo then they will be in a better position to comment on that. just a thought

Good points, lol dont know why I suggested Bala Sharks :S :hey:
Revised stocking list

I still think smaller species corys would get eaten by the bushfish

whuy all the big fish? Just curious, that's all.

I think with that tank, the unit etc, I'd pick a pair of larger fish and then work around that. Too many large fish would look too compact IMO, esp with the tank not a lack of height.

Tetras are more of a middle to bottom dweller. I think if you wanted shaoling fish, try for a bigger type i.e. Black skirt tetra. Or maybe, do away with tetra and look at species of barbs?

I've never kept larger fish, so wouldn't know if my suggestion would work out but the tetras you have picked, will be nothing more than feeder fish, in the end.

If Im being honest, I would revert back to your original stocking, with loads of smaller fish, you would have a lot more fish to choose from

Stocking will be:

10 Emperor Tetras
10 Cardinal Tetras
1 Red Dotted Severum
1 Rotkeil Severum
4 Geophagus sp. Tapajo Red Head
6 Leopard Corys
7 Sterbai Corys
6 Bronze Corys - Maybe
1 Jaguar Cat
1 SAE
1 L177

I'm also massively tempted by some Cichlasoma ornatum but I can't find out what they're temperaments like?.... Anyone got any info on these?

The sun cats are going to my LFS since they won't be suitable for my tank and the Bushfish will be going in another tank.... ;)

I like that stocking!
Personally, Id remove the Bronze Corys as these need lower temps than the other fish in there.
Cichlasoma ornatum won't be compatable with peacefull fish you want like the Tetras and Corys

That's what I thought about the Corys, guess I'll have to keep them out then.

I'm still MASSIVELY tempted by a Heros notatus, but they're bloody hard to find! Would 3 Sevs get along alright in a 475L tank?

:)

If Im being honest, I think you have too many large Cichlids bottom dwellers which are
1 Red Dotted Severum
1 Rotkeil Severum
1 Hero notatus
4 Geophagus sp. Tapajo Red Head
I would have an absolute maximum of 5 large cichlids.
Also, I would change Cardinal Tetras, for larger tetras, like BLK PHNTM TTRA, or BLEEDIN HRT TTRA, which have less chance of getting eaten as they are rounder
