New 475L Tank... (It's Arrived!)...

Nellys video clip is on page 3 of my jornal and he has a spotted silverdollar in there too for a size comparison :good:
Nelly has a different type of spotted silver dollar to what i was on about his is a real monster. I think theres 3 different types of spotted silver dollar but i could be wrong.

Right, I'm going for a 2" baby Tiger Oscar. Looking forward to seeing it grow!

What fish can I keep with it until it's around 5"? My girlfriend wants to keep smaller fish with the Oscar, even though I've told her that they'll have to be re-homed after a year, if not sooner.

Would the Corys be okay until it got a bit bigger? The L333 also? I'm going to be moving my other 2 tanks around the house and but I want to thin the stocking levels down and put some of the fish into the big tank.

HELP!

:)

Ive never kept one but from what ive heard they grow 1" per month when young. So 3 months until its 5" so it will be a bit pointless buying fish just to keep for that long.

Hmmmmmm..... I'll have a think tonight and see what I can come up with.

i would seriously think anout your eventual stocking plan not one for the next few months. if you really want a baby Keith then plan the tank around him/her. oscars do grow quite fast if fed and cared for correctly so i would get slightly bigger cichlids as the oscar will soon catch them up, overtake them and become boss. bigger fish tend to grow faster until they reach a certain size then slow down, lots of larger plecos do the same.
i dont think i would trust an oscar too long with corys unless the substrate was covered in wood etc so the oscar couldnt get to them but then it would be hard to clean and a lot of food would be there potentially contaminating the water that the oscar couldnt get at.
the L333 only grow to about 6 inches if i remember right so unless its fully grown i wouldnt risk them either. dont forget that small fish in a big tank means harder to catch unless the water is taken right down and the decor removed. i would only put in the new tank what i wanted to stay in the new tank to save a lot of hassle and stress on the fish, it might seem empty for a while but as soon as they grow the tank will look smaller trust me.

I'm going to stick with my original stocking for now. I'll wait for the Geos and Sevs to get to a decent size and then probably add an Oscar in a year or so, once the other, smaller, older fish have passed on...

Ryan :)

That could be quite a wait, dwarf cichlids live between 3-7 years and sevs and geos can live into their late teens.....

On reflection from the list I did earlier perhaps choose between the two geo groups though initially they could both go in but as they grow they could need to be split - just taking on board what Matt is saying about room as adults - all my past tanks have been growing tanks rather than adding adults together and as a result I have had a mix of sizes of adults so rather than hand picked A* quality size fish - though I can see the appeal of both ways.

just think about thining down the original stocking list as even that is probably too much. its alot of fish for the tank even though quite a few are going to stay smallish :good:

I'm thinking about this stocking now:

1 Chocolate Cichlid - Depends if it'll get on okay with the others, quite peaceful apparently.
1 Red Dotted Severum
1 Rotkeil Severum
4 Geophagus sp. Tapajo Red Head
2 Blue Rams
2 Apistogramma Borelli - 1m 1f
2 Apistogramma Cacatuoides - 1m 1f
6 Denison Barbs
3 Golden Wonder Killfish
5 Emperor Tetras
6 Leopard Cories
3 Whiptail Plecs
1 L333

37 Fish in total.

Is that still too much?

475L tank, 2x FX5.

Cheers,

Ryan

I think having such a range of sizes of fish is not the best, having rams and apistos as well as a chocolate cichlid is not right, but that's my opinion and not gospel. With a tank that size I'd honestly be tempted into central american cichlids, see this guys vids to see what a lot of space and not filling to capacity can give: http://www.youtube.com/user/lee1973n
Whatever you choose I'd add bit by bit and make a judgement call as you go...a lot will depend on the decor of your tank and how it's arranged as to whether the above looks too cluttered or not. Don't make the mistake that you need to fill the tank to capacity....

You also need to consider in what order you'd want to add the fish, they will have a bearing on the list and juvi/sub-adult/adult purchases etc

Hope that helps

I may knock the barbs and the whiptail plecs off the list then. I'll definitely edit my stocking as I go along... I'm hoping to take some of my current fish to my LFS and get credit for them since they won't do well in my new tank... I may very well trade in the Cockatoo and Umbrella Cichlids since they're currently causing a fair amount of squabbling in my current tank. Keeping the GBRs for sure though, they're a breeding pair too!

I really like Vieja Heterospila,Vieja Synspila and Vieja Zonata, but I'm pretty sure these will be too aggressive for the tank?

The only reason I was after a big choc cichlid was for it to replace the Oscar I want so badly...

Viejas can be very aggressive, as you say. They are also large, fast moving fish and ideally need a larger tank than a 475 litre.

Choc's are great ! Generally less problematic than oscars with other fish, but much the same size, look and character. I can never understand why they are not more popular !

I'm going for this now:

1 Chocolate Cichlid - Maybe...
1 Red Dotted Severum
1 Rotkeil Severum
4 Geophagus sp. Tapajo Red Head
2 Blue Rams
2 Apistogramma Borelli - 1m 1f
2 Apistogramma Cacatuoides - 1m 1f
2 Bushfish
5 Emperor Tetras
6 Leopard Cories
2 Sun Cats
1 L333

The Barbs are still in the mix, but their price is a little off putting... As for the Choc, I'll add that last if I feel I need to, but my hearts not set on getting one.
