New 475L Tank... (It's Arrived!)...

Seen a really nice pair of Jewel Cichlids today that may be making a home in my new tank. They're only around 2.5" at the mo, should fit in fine...

Jewels are actually really really aggressive so would instantly KO your rams and a lot of the other fish listed I have seen them seriously terrorise large oscars! I would avoid them to be honest.

especially if you get a pair. there are alot of smaller cichlids that get very teritorial and aggressive and keeping them with slow casual bottom feeders like corys is just a disaster waiting to happen im affraid. kribensis are another that cant really be kept with corys and have been known to remove eyes from them while defending their area

Hmmmm, I read so much info that says that Jewels really aren't that bad?!

On the other hand, I did see a beautiful juvi siamese tiger fish, gorgeous..... Why do big fish have to eat little fish? :(

Ditto Wills & Mattlee, I had 2 jewels for about 6 weeks, I tried them in each of my tanks and they ended up living with my little map turtle till I found them a home, they were only 2-3" and little monsters. Seriously I would avoid them, especially a pair.

Fair shout!

I'll give them a miss for sure then.

Still massively tempted to just throw the towel in and get an Oscar and that siamese tiger fish I saw today... lol

BUT, I know the misses would go mad if she couldn't have her cute, colourful fish... Speaking of which, are Blue Gouramis a no go?

Cant see why not a blue gourami, size wise (trying to remember off the top of my head now, been over a year since I had gourami) the blue & gold get between 4-6", had my Rotkeils with them for a while without bother. If you can get hold of them the snakeskin gourami is gorgous but that will get approx 8"+, but if the mrs wants blue have a look at the moonlight gourami, not as blue more silvery blue, very nice but again bigger than the normal blue gourami so may fair better with the red spot severum.

If you want a siamise tiger, forget the rams, tetra & cory's. Beautiful fish, not kept them personally but I had someone come and get some of my Rotkeils, he had a monster tank with only siamese tigers in (showed me loads of pics of all his tanks on his phone, nice chap too) They are aggressive he was telling me and actually stalk and hunt other fish, they will eat anything that they can get in their mouths. He gave up putting other fish in with them so now just has a species only tank with them in.

the siamese tiger can be hit or miss. the guy i got my catfish from on saturday had a big 7 inch specimin in his 6ft tank in with angels a few 5 inch cats, archer fish, a huge mono and a small 3 inch barb. his tank did seem a mix and match but it was peacefull and the datnioide was quite chilled out. he did only have about 10 fish in total so maybe this was why
they are cracking fish but normally sold as juvis that are slow growing. this is why they are expensive when adults. i wanted one but as my tank seems to have developed an americas theme i stuck with that in the end :good: they do get very big though reaching 19 inches i think  there are a few species abd some of them prefer brackish water as they age too so take this into account when/if you get one :good:
saying that i always thought archer fish and monos needed salt in their water too but the guy i went to see for the catfish had them from young and said they hadnt had salt at all and they looked very healthy and happy. the mono was huge and must have been 7 inches long and 11 inches tall :hyper:
there is a guy on AQ selling 2 medium sized tigers in birmingham at £50 each if i remember right  which doesnt seem a bad price really as at wharf the 2 incher juvis were about £20.....
i think it will be like cichlids where each fish has individual character but i dont think i would trust anything bigger than a rotkeil with smaller fish, even they might start having fish dinners when bigger its just one of those things!

Tank should be here at 12:00! :hyper:

Still unsure how I'm going the 'scape the tank, thinking large centre piece of wood and plants, and then more open swimming areas at either end... We'll see!

Before all the fun starts, I've got to go and empty two tank and move/hide them around the house :D

Pics will be up later ;)

Well, the tank turned up, damaged and not to the dimensions of which I ordered.

I've spoke to ND Aquatics and they're sending me a replacement FOC, to the measurements I originally specified.

Here's some pics...

Hopefully my new tank will be here within in the next 2 weeks...

Looks incredible! Shame about the mix up though :( I love the use of the kitchen units top and bottom though that looks really great! Its actually a really good idea as well as it gets around arguments with the other half about storage space haha :)

Yea, I think it looks pretty decent there.

I've spoke to John at ND Aquatics and he's getting my new tank made as a 'priority order'.

Hoping it'll be here next week, but that means I'll have to book another day off work :(

I've been having a think about my stocking, and I've decided to try and stick to a SA biotope...

Something like this:

TOP

10 Emperor Tetras
10 Cardinal Tetras

MIDDLE

1 Red Dotted Severum
1 Rotkeil Severum
2 Bushfish
4 Geophagus sp. Tapajo Red Head

BOTTOM

6 Leopard Corys
6 Sterbai Corys
6 Bronze Corys
2 Sun Cats
1 SAE

You think that's okay or too much?
