I don't quite know how to say this and it is...... embarrasing (to say the least)..... "I've never bred swordtails succesfully".... There I've said it...

I've had the odd brood of 7 here and 11 there, but never kept swords as an ongoing concern as it is with the other live bearers..... Now, at my age, it is also an objective to breed these (in their thousands)...

I only realised this when my son phoned me yesterday to say that the pet shop in his city took some 50 off him...... I've never been sucessful with swords.

read up on breeding them and make your tank as " swordtail breeding compatible " well all i did was keep my plant well stocked with plants i had 1 male to 3 females.(to keep him busy). i would raise you temperature to 26oC to encourage courtship.

The beginning of sucessful breeding.... Thursday I noticed a "ripe" female, and last night she started to deliver... Stood ready with the net til way past my bedtime & collected exactly 50 fry..... Once they're reared, the skies the limit..... I'M INTO SWORDS.!!! Thanks 5 year old Inchworm......(many may wonder what the 5yr old is about.... Look at the profile birthdate.........)

South africa? quite a few... used to live a little further north...

Just to clear this one for the rest of 'em, the term "ou" is exclusive South African, hence my question......

you noticed ... not quite exclusively tho, we used to use it in Rhodesia too....so maybe still used in Zim?
