Have any of you noticed that dr.bogger isn't answering this post anymore, I hope you have pm'd the guy to ask him to stay on the forum, as he has probably ran for the hills......

Tanks look good.

Although i disagree with how the Betta is being kept there is no point in everyone going on if he clearly understands
its not the right way to be kept but shows no willingless to change that fact.

IMO it seems he likes the way it looks on the wall and at the fishes expense (quality of life) hes willing to
keep it there.

Just my opinion.

Do u change your bettas water? in a container that size you would need to be doing 100% water changes weekly if not bi-weekly. Poor thing is probably floating at the top gasping for air because of poor water quality... I do 100% water changes weekly in all of my unfiltered betta tanks and they're all 1 gallon or more so the poor fish dont have to live in their own filth  You have an empty 2.5 gallon so why not move the poor fish into it, he'll be a lot happier.

I do 100% water changes every 3-4 days... and i also use my finger and splash the water around once per day to get oxigen into the water... Hes not gasping for air, he just likes sitting at the top of the water.

:good:

I can understand that getting contradictions can be frustrating but this is a forum and its for getting advice and opinions off of people so please dont take it personally ;) .

I hope im imagining things but did you say u make a 100% water change on your betta tank??

That is really really really bad!

#1: It stresses the fish hugely from having to remove the fish and re-introducing it to the tank

#2: It will kill beneficial bacteria! leaving your water worse off than changing the water in the 1st place!

#3: Doing a 100% water change is so bad that the betta would nearly be better off without water changes at all!

Do a 25% water change every 3 or 4 days! ;)

hi, this is actually a very common habit amongst betta keepers,

#1: bettas are a jumping fish, and will jump from ditch to ditch in the wild, even some of my long finned bettas jump for food from time to time, so long as the new water is a similar temp to the old, and you are quick and careful, they are fine, and will get used to it before long,

#2: absolute rubbish! water hold minuscule amounts of beneficial bacteria, thats why adding old tank water wont help a new tank cycle, it collects on surfaces and in filtered tanks, 90% of it is in the filter media.
#2.1: that tank is not filtered (quite common with bettas) so not changing the water will lead to higher and higher levels of ammonia, leading to ammonia poisoning, septicemia and death.

#3: see #1 and #2 above

I am going to make no comments on any of the tank sizes, each person if free to decide what they want to do with their fish and i think enough advice has been given on this subject. The only thing i do want to make a point of as it has only barely been touched on is the fact that bettas jump and especially as your fish likes the surface it might be an idea to find a way of making it a little harder for him to get out.

I hope you can get the cycling sorted on the bowfront, that tank has some fab potential. What are you thinking of stocking it with?

Edited to say that Ibble is right, in this situation a 100% change is a must and we all do it with our smaller betta tanks

Read the first pages, he said he carry's out reg 4 day water changes (I think)
Stop battering him and leave off, he took the advise in, and as others have said it's his choice anyway.
Comparing a fish to a dog is ok to get a theory across but to prove a point-
Half of you have disagreed with each other without even knowing.A betta is fine without a heater if the house is kept warm....Mine was without one for 2 months with no change in behaviour.

ok first thing dont get upset just stating my opinion
1. That bowl is WAY to SMALL for the betta but not only that thebowl doesn't even have any filtration thereofre in your pic the betta is close to the top probably gasping or air , my advice like lots of other members would be to remove the betta into a 2 gallon at least before he dies (you have to say it cruel to make a point ).
2. Other tanks look good :good:

And yes, i understand the bowl is too small for him, so please, stop saying that.... i get the point :shout:

No offence, but im realy starting to get annoyed with everyone badgering me about how my tank(s) is too small, etc... I know they are small, and i know im taking a chance, but give me a brake will ya?
...Did anyone except me read this?
I can't seriously believe some of you are saying the fish doesn't look happy.!1! photo and you can tell that

Each to there own - we all have our own opinions on fish keeping and the best practices. At the end of the day this is a Forum, and people will post there own opinions if they think its in the fish's welfare, and pratical advice for the fishkeeper!
It is then down to the individual to take on board constructive criticism, and put it into practice.
Maybe a dog and shed - was'nt the best comparrison, but it got my opinion across.
If he feels the Betta is generally happy in that fish bowl - then its up to him, thats his choice. My opinion is it is extremly ignorant to think a fish does not think enough, to understand "quality of life" and also unfair for the fish to live its life 'gasping' for air.
Fish generally swim at the surface for a reason and i can only think of two
1. Air
2. Feeding time!

sorry 3 reasons ... its dead....

If your Betta is however, not recieving enough oxygen in the tank - eventually it will die from exhaustion & illness - maybe even give itself swim bladder from gasping air to frequently (which does happen).

Goodluck with your tanks - i hope you have a think about your 2gal and your Betta  :/

its not nice to gang up on the newbee, EVERYONE HAS DONE SOMTHING STUPID AT SOME POINT UNTILL THEY LEARNED BETTER!!!!
this should be a place where new people can get good advice from others, not so much of the harsh stuff, yea myself as well had my first betta in a little cup of a bowl, they i got some advice and now i put my boys in at least i gal per fish. my only concern to the newbee about the hanging tank is that it has no lid,, and most bettas like to jump once in a while.. so u could come home to a dried up dead fish on the floor, so when u have the money and time it might be a better idea to get him another bowl,, somthing with a lid. adn yes he might like more space to swim but u arent ''killing him'' in the little one. and maby get him a live plant instead of the plastick one ,, somtimes they can snag betta fins and tear them, also a live plant will eat up some of the poop wasts from the fish and make the water healther. tanks dont always have to be filterd but u r keeping up with good water changes so it should be ok. and yes the gold fish would like a bigger tank at some point but u said yiou will get one so i dont know what everyones problem is.enjoy ur fish and dont get too upset

It's not so much people ganging up but trying to give good advice. Ok, some people could word it better but it still amounts to the same thing, the tanks are too small for the fish.
My biggest gripe is with the Betta tank. People are quick to jump on others for keeping their fish in unsuitable conditions but when it comes to Bettas, it's a different matter. We tell people to keep their fish in a good sized heated and filtered tank but don't feel that Bettas require this, not sure I understand why. They need just as much care as any other fish.
Dr. Bogger, your tanks are really nice and please don't leave the forum. You will find that your fish will be a lot happier in bigger tanks and you will gain more satisfaction from knowing this. We are all trying to give you good advice, just going the wrong way about it.

Yes, the goldfish need a bigger tank now, and may be stunted if kept in it any longer, the betta could do with a better tank...It's funny how all betta keepers have different opinions, I posted that they should have a cycled filtered tank, but was told 'betta's don't need filters' only a couple of weeks ago...
If you think a fish with the brain the size of a little snail is going to think about the qaulity of life, your wrong.
For all you who still believe that the betta is in bad health because it was at the top of the tank when the pic was taking, they do actually swim...

It's a case of people having their own opinions, so I suppose there is no right or wrong.
I'm a firm believer in all fish having a decent sized filtered and heated tank and am quite rigid in my belief.
I keep several types of fish, not just Bettas and feel they all need the same care regardless of what type of fish they are.
Call me an old stick in the mud but what can I say.... :look:

Brilliant.

As an active poster on a varied array of forums it becomes obvious that there are always people out there that simply look for threads to post so they can moan and complain.

I have a dog, hamsters, fish and a rabbit.

When my dog/hamsters die I will be very upset. When my fish die I stick them down the loo if they are big or bin then if they are small. As for the rabbit, I’ll crack open a bottle of something bubbly as I hate the smelly flea ridden thing (sorry Zo!!)

A dog will stay with me all day, sit on my lap and we can enjoy each others company. My fish just wait till feeding time. Yes I spend money on them, I’ve trained them to know where food is but they are fish and sadly I have been brought up to appreciate all animals just some more than others. My tank gets cleaned regularly, I separate fry to save them, I’ve spent 4 months trying to get my BN to breed which finally has happened but I still think a dog is more important than my fish?

If I found a dead dog in the road the RSPCA will investigate and probably involve the police.

If I found a bag of dead fish on the road are the RSPCA going to care?

He said right at the beginning he changes the Betta tank every 3-4 days, but of course, people read his first message and then post a reply without reading the rest of the thread. Then 3 or 4 people start chatting amongst themselves about how bad he is as a fish owner.

Get a life. If he wants to pour a bottle of bleach into each tank he can, we can't stop him? Post a message saying yes the tank might be small but it’s HIS choice, not yours?

Mate, the betta will probably die soon anyway, mine always do, but I guess that’s because I’m a bad fish owner. When he does stick him in the bin and get another one!!!

I’ll await all your snotty replies now, but like the original poster I’m not going to read them, instead I’ll get on with my life and enjoy my pets in the way I wish too.

Rant over………….
