What the yell have you done here? You shoupd have left it how it was!. You do need the black bit that you got told to take out. Its the most important part. The white carbon filters out big bits of debri such as plants and mainly uneaten food! The black bit doesnt let dirt through. It only lets water and bacteria through. As for the blue box with white things in. You need to take the white things out of the case and put them back in the blue box that goes in the middle. Those white things are where all the healthy bacteria live. The way you have done this is shocking to tell you the truth! I get the idea you ate unsure of how filters work so i have explined this the same way i would a child. If you need more technical help just ask.

1/ What 'white carbon filters' ? Even if they were in there, carbon media is used as a means to get rid of any treatment chemicals you may have been using in your tank.
2/ The 'black bit' DOES let some dirt through, only fine filter floss does the job well enough to trap even the smallest of particles of dirt and why would these 'black bits' let bacteria through ?
3/ It is very simple and widely used to run a filter simply with sponges (as has been mentioned to you before), yes, the biomax noodles are best to use (a bonus point if you can tell me why and how) but using JUST sponges works fine.
4/ If you need more technical help just ask.

Without adding some old media, as the OP was wanting to replace her old filter, she would have ended up with an uncycled tank.

Tanks don't need carbon in the filters on a day to day basis, only for a sohrt time, for specific reasons, like reducing tannins or removing medications once the course is finished.

Bacteria doesn't flow through the filter with the water. Bacteria stays, more or less, where it grows and only colonises the filter as the colony expands

You also don't NEED the biomax, thought it's a very nice place for bacteria to live. My two smallest filters don't have room for biomax/ bio-rings etc. I just use a piece of filter floss and a sponge and those tanks are cycled and running fine.

None of those 'bacteria in a bottle' products have ever been proven to work. Seriously, you're starting to make yourself look a little daft now, go and read up on our hobby, ingest it, think about it, THEN advise people as you may see neccesary.

Yes I had an ammonia spike which I believe was due to the old filter not working properly.
Yes I have fish in my tank which I have had since November.
I use stress coat after a water change. I had stress zyme when I first set up the tank.
I have interpet tapsafe.
Anything else or is it your bedtime now?

#sigh#.. wrong, again.. the ONLY things that get rid of NitrItes and Ammonia are a fully functional tank and/or regular water changes. You're relying way too much here on chemicals to do the job for you, proving once more that you haven't got a clue what you're talking about.

Thankyou lock. And tbhamquel does remove all that. However if you have loads of crap in your tank it will shoot up again. Offcourse the filter is there to remove it too!. Bottom line is. She shoulda left both running and used a bit off stress zyme. I do know what im talking about. The things i have said are not wrong. There just different to you lot. I have a 260 litre juwel.aquarium. cost 900 with the cabinet 6 years ago. There still 500 today. I know how to care for fish and i take pride in keeping fish as a hobby. Thanks
