Looking at the photo, I would give that old media a gentle but good rinse in some removed tank water, it looks like it is caked in rotting food like Tetra Prima. Any old sponge that cannot fit in the U2 can be simply placed in the tank, so that you don't end up throwing away perfectly good bacteria. Either that or give your old filter impeller/cavity a clean, chuck the excess old media back inside and then see if you get better flow, I suspect you might if I'm right about the clogged up looking photo (and you then have a filter ready to act as a QT filter when needed).

yeh deffo looks clogged up, maybe a clean and squeeze on one sponge tonight then do the other one in 7-10 days time "just in case"

Ah brilliant. Ok so just take some water out from the tank into a bowl and wash the sponges gently. I shall do that just now thanks.

You don't need to run carbon in tanks on a day to day basis.

We're not saying that the Biomax isn't for bacteria to live on, it is, but there aren't any bacteria on there when it's new, are there? As I said, the OP needed to put at least some of the old media in the new filter or they'd have to cycle all over again.

You can run perfectly successful, healthy tanks with nothing but sponge in the filter. I have myself, many times.

You might also want to look at how much you're feeding; as NOTG says, a lot of that does look like left over food.

Yeah, brilliant, but the new ones dont have any bacteria living on it do they, so they are useless at the moment, while the sponges are stuffed full of bacteria already....common sense isnt it.

Putting a brand new filter into a tank means it will need to start cycling all over again, the sponges have no bacteria in them to control the ammonia from the fish which results in ammonia spike.
Putting the old media into a new filter means the bacteria is already living thus no ammonia spikes or unstable water.
That simple enough for you?
