Juvi JD - Jack (how unimaginative!!)

Blue Acara - Unnamed

Blue Acara and Convict (Steve) - The odd couple!

Chocolate cichlide - Bourneville

Bourneville with Blood Parrot - Smithy

Smithy and Blue Acara

New addition - Port Acara (unnamed)

Here are my guess on Sex.

JD Male - Because he has little to no specks on the gill plate. This can change as he matures but as of now it looks male.

Blue acara- Female for sure. Female acaras have the Sloping head. Also they are more round.

Convitc- I would say Male. Females tend to have more color. in the belly area most of the time.

Chocolate- cant really sex these guys till fully mature. Watch of that hump on the head if it gets bigger its a male.

Port acara- I would say female. she has the same shape as the Blue acara that looks female.

Blood parrot- They are freaks and I don't think you can sex them at all. But as far as Parrots go thats a nice one.

THe choc is especially lovely ! Why these are not as popular as oscars I will never know.

As for sexing, I'd say ....

JD . male

blue acara . female

port acara . female

convict . male

Not sure on others.

Could the Male JD breed with one of the female acara's in theory? As they are both part of the Cichlasoma genus?

Also the convict is actually female and has recently laid eggs (and attacked me whilst trying to unblock a plant from my filters intake as i ventured too close to her cave!)

Apart from that and my BN plecs I know nothing on how to sex my fish!

I look forward to seeing if Bourneville develops a nauchal bump, my girlfriend will be very unhappy if he/she does, I would be quite pleased and hope he is a he!!

I think the only reason oscar's are more popular is that they seem to be more confident whereas the chocolates can be a bit more shy, great fish though and is definately the prize of my tank

It's possible. I'm no expert in hybrid matters but all sorts of weird pairings seem to have the potential to hybridise and, as you point out, they are not that unrelated genetically.

Lol. Typical. I bet I've got the others wrong too !

The CA cichlids are bad about hooking up with differant fish. They could pair up but no fry will come of it.

No mate they can't JDs are central american, acaras are south american, as said they may pair up but nothing would come of it,
JDs are now classified as Rocio octofasciata, Most of the Cichlasoma genus has now been better classified

You aught to name your JD "Black Jack", because he is a magnificent black colouration. I don't see many darker jacks, mainly normal pale green/bluey colour to the extreme blue in the electric gene.

When I first got the JD he was farely pale and until it wasn't until he was moved into my 100gal that he coloured up and went so dark. Definately see what you mean about the polleni. Will be interesting to see how he colours as he grows!

Thanks for the comment on Bourneville, he is my pride and joy (lol), he is a bit of a baby but when foods about he is insane! Tried dropping in some pleco wafers the other day but he ate 9 whole and wouldnt let any sink despinte the array of other food i tried to distract him with!
