I have been offered a possible swap of 2 blue acara for some of my Ellioti, now I had been after blue acara for absolutely ages, but I now have the beautiful Aequidens diadema Bailey and I am reading conflicting information about whether these 2 can mix.

In theory they should be ok, although from what Wills said, Bailey can be a bit nasty with newcomers, there is of course, a chance they could hybridise too.

Its always a worry adding new fish, I have no problems (at the moment) and Bailey has joined the texas group, it hilarious to watch him/her trying to keep up when they go for a mad swim, then they all hide leaving Bailey in the middle of the tank I swear they are playing hide and seek  It wouldnt be a problem if I had the other 2 400l tanks set up for the fronts and the coldwater, I would have their tank spare and the 300l spare, but we had a set back yesterday with Jodie, they insisted on a second blood test at £80 that was my filter money  The keyholes were going in the 180 till they grew a bit, I suppose if the blue acara didnt get on with Bailey they could go in the 300l with the gourami and angels??? oh decisions lol

Would be fine to go with the angels/gourami, if there was a problem, I think the only problem will be how big are these BA's, as Bailey had a tendancy to eat smaller fish, even rainbows  So you could always grow them in the angels tank or even with the Ellioti until large enough to add to the 400L. Sorry to hear about Jodie :(

They are about 5 & 3",see if the swap happens first lol.

Jodie is fine, my vet messed up her blood test and the Vets at Cambridge couldnt tell if the results were ok or not so did it again, she is as fit as a fiddle acording to her blood results! Blood tests are £40 at my vet but £80 at Cambridge!

I think it will be fine, I think Blue Acaras are prettier and more fun than Diadema anyway :p

What you sayin about bailey!! :p

I was quite tempted to mix her with an acara at some point but I was worried about hybridization as well. I was looking an A.Rondoni but decided against it but in a bigger tank not sure how she would react?

So @ Star and Wills, do you think the Diadema is more of a 'inbetweener' of the well known Andinoacara species? ie: not as gentle as the well common blues (Latifrons and Pulcher) and not as robust and territorial as the Green Terrors? (Rivulatus, Gold Saum, Silver Saum)

I would not worry about them spawning because the fry will get eaten. If you guys think it will work go for it. Sometimes you just have to give it a go.

Eggs get eaten very quickly in the tank the servs keep spawning but eggs get gobbled up very quickly. If the swap comes about I will give them a try in the 400l if it doesnt work I can always move them to another tank.

Glenbo, I cant fully comment on temprement I have only had her a few days, but so far she is an absolute darling.

Yeah Ive always described her as between the two like you said glen but shes not all out like a GT. The thing I found with her is if she lets something live over night they will be okay :) Bit of a morbid way of putting it but true lol.

She seems to be getting on ok with everyone else in the tank so far, just having to watch the female Ellioti she is in full breeding colours again but no male, she is right techy at the moment, she is full flaring at all the texas, if she doesnt calm down she will be moved to the quaranteen tank tonight for her own safety. Its quite funny though she has flared at Bailey a couple of times but she just moves up the tank so she can see the tv again, Bailey seems to be really fasinated with the telly.

Yeah im not actually surprised she always seemed quite intelligent and interested in the room around her, if only I had known she needed a TV
