I had a problem with melafix and/or primafix earlier this year. I used the combination in my community tank as one of my gourami had something I couldn't identify. After putting them in, I went to watch a 45 min tv programme. I came back after to find every single one of my pencilfish (N beckfordi) dead. In 45 mins! Whether it was the melafix, the primafix, or the combination of the two that did it I don't know, but it is possible for these safe products to kill fish.
I have heard since that pencilfish are sensitive to melafix. I certainly won't be using either of them near my new ones.
By the way, I now have a quarantine/hospital tank!
