Fish keeping experience:
My dad had always had a pond when I was growing up and kept various fish, but I was never very interested in them. Even these days, I struggle to be interested in watching fish from above Id much rather look at them side on in a big tank. When I was a naive teenager, I saw painted glass fish in my local pet/fish shop, and fell in love. At the time I thought tropicals were far too difficult to keep, so settled for a couple of goldfish. They lasted about 10 years until I had an accident one day and smashed the tank
Moving on 20-odd years from first seeing the painted glass fish, when I finally moved into what I hope will be my forever house last summer I figured it was about time I realise my ambition of keeping tropicals. After some research I then realised that the only complication compared to goldfish was adding a heater
. Armed with a little more knowledge, I abandoned plans to search out the unethical painted glass fish, and settled on a more acceptable combination of guppies, harlequins and cories. Being a fickle sort, with this whole new world of fish selection opened up to me, I did go through lots of stocking changes, by advertising fish on here and giving some to friends. I also acquired another 60 litre tank within a month, then a 160 litre a month later, and a 240 litre after that, selling one of the 60 litres along the way.
Im now pretty happy with all my stocking, and am not planning to get any new fish. I say that now...but...!
Current tanks:
I ended up with just lampeyes in my 60 litre, which I loved as a simple tank set up. However I then moved my panda cories into there as they seemed to be getting lost in the bigger tank. Since the pandas moved, theyve been breeding and I currently have 3 babies growing up in there. Im not sure what my long term plans are for the pandas I may rehome them at some point.
My 240 litre is probably my second favourite possession. I always wanted (and still do) clown loaches, but dont really have space for a suitable tank. After a suggestion on here I got polka dot loaches, and I love them to bits. My tigers look quite stunning against the blue background of the tank and the bright green of the swords, plus theyre very active and make the tank so entertaining. The firemouth is my compromise on getting an Oscar - again, Ill never really be able to keep a suitable tank. He is my favourite, possibly because hes the only one I can definitely identify the others all look alike
. He throws regular Im hungry tantrums when Im near the tank, and Im trying to train him to be an oscar
. My plec was bought as an afterthought on in the mild hope of aiding a sudden algae problem. He has had absolutely no effect on the algae. However he is cute, if a little lazy and shy.
My 160 litre has gone through a lot of changes, but Im now happy with the stocking. The fairy cories were an accidental buy when I saw them in the lfs I thought they were schwartzi cories, but I think it was a very fortuitous mistake and love their character. The banded gouramis are lovely they remind me of my old honeys in terms of their polite character - I previously rehomed the honeys as they just didnt fit with my stocking. I have a love/hate affair with my diamonds. Most of the time I love them, but they are quite skittish, and when one starts, it winds all the others up so they start bombing around scared witless. Im adding more plants to try and make them feel more secure
Favourite species:
Clown loaches and oscars. Want.
Personal/random information:
I recently moved out from the suburbs of London to the slightly greener pastures of Surrey, and am loving it so far. I have a horse called Tilda, who is my favourite possession, I ride her most days after work. Shes 15 and Ive only had her for 2 years, but hopefully weve still got many years left together. I used to do a lot of endurance running and have so far run more than 40 marathons and longer races, but since Ive got back into horses I am doing a lot less. I dont drive, so cycle everywhere Ive arranged things so that work, home and horse are all within a few miles of each other, with a couple of pubs en route!
Having been a chain-smoking, alcoholic couch potato for most of my twenties, I am now a teetotal non-smoker. I do still spend too much time sitting down at the computer, where I am quite active on a few running and equine related forums and of course facebook. I dont have a TV, but all of the above means I wouldnt have much time to watch it anyway! I currently live alone in a 200 year old cottage smack bang in the middle of a town centre, but having recently persuaded my boyfriend to marry me, hell be moving in shortly.
Edit - sorry for punctuation errors, am on iPhone and it's correct on my text box but when I post, it disappears. Yes, I am a grammar pedant.
