would it be worth it for me to try to grow live rock in a 10G? also what does a protein skimmer do, cause they are ALOT... thanks any info on live rocks would be great!!
Maybe they can but of the multitude of saltwater tanks I've seen, and I've seen nearly every type there is, every last one had a protein skimmer and it was always something seen as essential.Navarre said:A tank cant last without a protiene skimmer? That really depends on the type of system you are using.
I have one on my 40 gallon setup but not on my 100 gallon setup. Protien skimmers are very good at extracting from the water. The problem is that it does not differentiate between good eliments and bad protien. Thus if you run a natural system then you are probably going to remove alot of very useful trace eliments.
On a normal liverock system with perhaps a trickle filter or canister filter then a protien skimmer is a worthwhile addition though.
As for the live rock.. I presume you mean can you use it as a filter? Live rock doesnt grow it matures. I have a friend who has a 14 gallon setup, no skimmer and only live rock as filtration. The bioload is very low of course for a tank this size but it proves that live rock can work in any size tank.
Above all, be patient and take things slow and steady. If you do this then you system will reward you in the months to come
